Sprayed Black Roof - Windows Need to Come Out?

So I want to get my roof sprayed black...don't want it wrapping because you can't do much with it RE detailing.

I went to a reputable sprayer in my local area for a quote. They told me to do it properly they need to remove the front and back windows....and that this would be an extra £120!

I've seen somewhere on this forum that the roof (I have an E86) can be removed with 6 screws...is this correct? And if so do you think that this would be an easier way to spray the roof rather than removing the windows.

As always, any help greatly appreciated.

Surely the windows can be masked off - seems like overkill to remove them.

This post suggest just 6 screws and adhesive to remove roof panel:

I thought the same thing...and I'm trying to figure out if they're just trying to rip me off or being over careful.

If it is just 6 screws and adhesive then surely that is a much easier way of doing it.

Some sealant also , but seems thats all there is!

They'll want to remove the windows so they can get a decent edge and prevent any peeling, at a guess.

It can obviously be done with the windows in situ, but they're just being overly cautious about it.

If the roof can come off easily enough, then that's your best bet.

Personally, I'd just get it wrapped gloss black and get it re-wrapped if it shows up loads of swirl marks after a while.

I was going to get it wrapped, but was told by another forum member not to as when you polish and wax your car the roof doesn't look as good?

I can't see a problem - I mean the roof is a different colour to the rest of the car so you're not having to match bodywork.

You don't really need to detail the wrapped roof, i've only been washing mine and it comes up mint.

Re painting, the sides wouldn't need to come out, surely same case with the rear, its the rubber strip along the windshield that is going to be an issue when painting.

I've seen a progress post on someone fitting a carbon roof showing how to remove old roof, not sure if it was on here of zpost?

I work at a auto refurb place, resprays going on daily... Struggling to see why they'd need to remove windows. Just masking off the rubber seals and covering the windows would suffice.

Id avoid wrapping the roof if your a detailing guy... I'd get another quote if i were you.

Thanks for the advice - much appreciated :)

5ps worth

For £120, I'd let them take windows out buddy
You'll get a clean edge to all windows, the paint line instead of horrid masking line of which will break or become obvious as time goes by.
As the sprayer can go right up to the seam edge

To me this sounds more like a guy doing a quality job that someone with a roll of tape to me, plus I'd even say maybe a better spray job as cleaner line without glass in place

No brainer for a mere £120 buddy
