Spotify hack on E89

HI,

I've read some details about a hack on the S-Drive and at the moment have a unit I can bluetooth Spotify to but would be ideal on the main screen as an app!
BMW connected drive said no as bluetooth not audo set up!

Any ideas or anyone managed to upgrade software. I have a 2016 model....

I have a 2016 too, it isn't possible to mirror the app using the existing head unit through idrive

You can however get the combox enabled, these were fitted as standard from 2014 (otherwise its prohibitively expensive to get one retrofitted) - I paid a coder about £75 and it took him about half an hour.

Once the combox is enabled, you can stream amazon prime, Spotify etc., by selecting "external device" in iDrive, you can then control the volume and skip tracks using the steering wheel controls or the head unit. The screen will not mirror what is on your phone, but it will show the artist and track name - if you're also running "Camsam" then you'll get the camera warnings through your speakers over the music, which is handy.

Hope that helps

I'm not sure about later models, mine is 2011, and implemented what you can find in my signature

I only use Waze and Spotify in the car, so suits me just fine

I have an iPod touch with Spotify on plugged into the USB under the armrest, Spotify then comes up as an app in the media section of the iDrive, can view playlists etc and the full album art comes up too, it also works via bluetooth too but with much less functionality, you can only change track via the steering wheel controls for the current playlist, if you want to switch playlist then that needs to be done on the phone. Mine is a 2013 model, I'm not aware of any special option that would enable this, I was under the impression that it was a standard function of iDrive.

Hi Jason
Do you know the guy you used or have details for the combox rework?

Thanks

That sounds like a good solution. How does the iPod touch connect to spotify?

I make sure that all my playlists are downloaded to the iPod as the iPod doesn't have its own internet connection, the only issue with this solution is every time that the car is switched off you need to close the app on the iPod and relaunch it before the idrive will detect it again.

You can go one step further than this to make it work. If your iPod is new enough, you can set up 'shortcuts'. I make it so that when it detects it is connected to the car, it waits 10 seconds and then closes spotify and then opens spotify. This should get you going :D

And as Bryand said, you need to set the playlists to be available offline. I think this requires a premium account.

I will give the shortcut thing a go and yes downloading of tracks does require a premium subscription.

In the 'shortcuts' app on my iphone I went to 'automation', then created an automation to do the following:

When:
iPhone connects to "Tune2Air".

Do:
Scripting: Open: Spotify
Scripting: Wait: 10 sec
Now Playing: play/pause: iPhone

I use the Tune2Air module as mine is a 2009 car with combox, but I don't see why it wouldn't work if yours seems to be a problem with pressing play from the iPod.
