Sports Mode Activation

Don't all shout at me! According to my owners manual I have to select the Sports option whilst the ignition key is in position 2. i.e. before I start the car. Is this correct or can I switch the Sports mode on and off simply by pressing the Sports Button whilst I'm driving? All advice gratefully received as always. :?

Never heard of that advice regarding ignition key in position 2?
I start her up and then press sport button. You can press it on and off while driving too

Doesn't it mean that it has to be in 'at least' position 2 before it can be enabled - thus when it's actually started up you're past position 2?

Well, you can't switch it on until you start up the engine - so yeh I guess that's one interpretation. It's an old bugbear on here why you can't have it set to on as default!

Yeah I find that I forget to turn it on a lot of the time, just not got it into my driving routine to press the button after I start the engine

I very rarely have the road space to use it so hardly ever press the button.
However, you can turn it on or off as often as you like when the car is running.

This hasn't improved over the years - mrs gannets MINI Coupe has a sport button... which you have to press every time. Everything else can be programmed per key, but not this...

still the Saxo doesn't have a sport button...

There is a bit of kit available for the mini that sets it on as default, apparently very easy to fit.

Mrs G doesn't want a strut brace does she? :D Still not got enough posts on totalmini to post a for sale!

Only gotcha I've heard about the sport button is that you have to take your foot off the accelerator (or at least reduce pressure on the accelerator - can't say I've tested it that specifically) before it will actually start working. That is, if you are at half throttle and press the button, you won't get a big surge of power (theoretically launching you into the car you happen to be tailgating at the time, or perhaps hitting 88MPH and sending you back to the future...).
You press the button, take the foot off the accelerator then press down on the accelerator for the 'sport mode' to start working.
Edit - sorry, should have mentioned, the above obviously only applies if you're actually driving at the time.

You're right about the lifting off enzed4. I use mine all the time, I like the way the car feels more on edge with it on, requiring more care and attention.

Weird you mention 88mph - that is the GPS speed I set on the motorway... Just because 8 is a lucky number - never even clicked that I am on the edge of time travel all the time

oh is there... would need to be on for my key and off for her key...

strut brace doubt she knows what one is :D  TBH I haven't had much chance to push the car to feel any need... It's barely run in...

Well, there was a kit that used to be available, but cannot see it now. Over in the US there was a how-to-guide posted up, creating a simple circuit to activate it connected to the cigarette power & the sport button under the trim, however it doesn't work on 2011+ cars. This would probably explain why I purchased one on my first MCS and got it fitted but never did on the JCW, and probably why I cannot find them for sale...sorry!
