I used it a lot on the hills of Piedmont on my holiday; it was the perfect place especially with the roof down. It was great to hear the engine rumble wi th  the roof down

i use mine everyday, have to be pretty quick when pulling out from the junction near my house and work so need it then

also sometimes on the dual carriageway into work and at other times when i want to use the throttle lightly and not have to bury my foot in it, when its in comfort mode, to get a move on. switch back to comfort when i am up to speed and no longer need to gain speed..... still only averaging about 31mpg though and not the quoted figures of 41mpg for combined driving!

I never use Sport + as basically just switches the traction control off, not good if you hit a patch of diesel.
Tim.

Surely the Sport+ mode must do more than turn off traction control otherwise you could just engage Sport mode and the turn it off yourself. I only use sport mode. I still don't fully understand what knocking the auto shift to the left does but I use both when I want to have a bit of fun.

If you use sport mode is it still worth moving the auto shifter over or is that surplus to requirements? (I never use manual gears btw).

Yes every day. Turns on the beast in the 35i when I need to be very quick merging over 4 lanes of motorway when leaving the office!

I only hope its warmed up before you give it the beans!!!!! :D

Don't you worry, this car is very well looked after, to a silly level.

Its quite a complex setup in the e89. Normal, Sport and Sport plus have different levels (mapping) for throttle, gear selection, steering weight and traction options. Add to that on autos and DCT's that you also have manual control or sports shifting to add into it. There's never been a full open explanation from BMW about all the different stages and how the auto/DCT sports shift impacts things.

Sports mode on the e89 (having come from the single sport option in the e85) certainly in combination with the DCT also makes more differences to valve timing etc as the noise that comes from the exhaust on the 35i in sports mode is louder, not to mention the extra pops and crackles on the engine overrun. Its a great combination and the reason I have the 35i/DCT.

Hate to admit this, but it's true - never pressed the button in 10 months of ownership :-(

I might make a point of fixing that this weekend ;-)

So you don't drive it like a hire car

InvisibleName,

The effect of pressing the sport button in an E89 is different to an M. In an M it sharpens the throttle response only. I find that this makes it impossible to drive smoothly in town because you either have no throttle or Lewis Hamilton-on-the-starting-grid levels of throttle. There is no middle ground at all. It's a real pain the in a** because it is so difficult to modulate it properly, hence why I only ever use it out on the open road.

when i drove 180miles up north, i had the sport button on all the way.. still averaged 40.2mpg and i was booting it for 3/4 of the journey

When I drove to Birmingham from Devon several weeks ago I didn't use the sport button. Car said 39mpg on way up, then 37 on way back. I worked it out by refulleing and actually had got 35mpg. Not impressed.

OBC's are not super accurate are they?

35 mpg is not that bad surely? I think I would rather get that in a Z4 than 50mpg in a Kia Picanto!

Mine feels tighter in sports mode steering ,handling seems to have a bit more urge and sounds better somtimes get a bit of a pop and crackel so have it on quite a bit, on the motorway with the roof up have it in normal most of the time. :D :D

I normally use Sport + 90% of the time and Sport the rest. Imo the normal mode has horribly slow throttle reactions considering its a sports car and whilst driving the more weight and feel with the steering the better.

When you put it like that!!!!!!

I turn on Sport mode on occasion. It's crazy fun. Never when my wife is in the car though!
