Sport / manual. No first gear

Anyone else experiencing this problem?

When the car is in steptronic mode (gear shifter over to the left) and in M manual mode, the car doesn't select first gear automatically, even when I come to a full stop. It will go from 5 to 4 and 4 to 3 ect but when I come to a complete stop it doesn't go any lower than gear 2. I can manually out it into gear 1 myself though.

When the car is in auto mode (S1, S2) ect, without me shifting, it selects all the gears correctly.

Is this normal for the manual mode?

I have the 35i with DCT and it will always select 1st when I come to a stop. As a guess it's a software problem, but the more informed on here will probably set you right.
 
I think it pulls off in second gear as standard unless you give it the beans. Stops the wheels spinning etc and still has enough power.

Well I just taken for a quick spin there just now and driven to end of street in 2nd and stopped, still in 2nd. Then I turned around in a full circle and driven back but got up a few gears and then stopped to an end again, this time it went into 1st!!
Confused :(
 
i thought for it to start off in first gear, it had to be in sports mode. otherwise it always pulls off in second

Sorted! That fixed it. Sports mode must have been off. Thanks envy.

Just me getting to know the car I guess :).
 
Just tried in my auto and it goes down into 1st every time even when it's not in sport mode!
it is the new 8 speed auto box!
 
Picked up my car from the garage last night with a full BMW technicians report stating that the transmission is working as it should. They even called into BMW's tech help to consult and verified that the car is working as designed. I also found out that this will happen on 2009 to 2010 models only (supposedly). The car will pull off in 2nd gear when in steptronic mode WITHOUT the sport button being pressed.

thanks for the update. it is pretty much as i expected really. mine seems sluggish moving off if sports mode is not activated, hence me always having sports mode on whenever im about to move off from the lights etc
 
Do you have the 6 speed by any chance? I had the 6 speed in my old car and it never went into first in manual mode. The 6 speeds have always done that regardless of the car. It will only happen on the 2008 to 2011 E89 models because the 8 speed wasn't introduced until 2012. So you should have been advised it was due to it being the older style 6 speed which has subsequently been replaced. Hence why when you ask on here a lot of the guys either have the 7 speed DCT or the new 8 speed which works differently.
 
That confused me when I first had the 30 auto. in normal mode its 2nd in sports it selects 1st. bunny jumping round roundabouts makes you look a prat thinking your in 2nd.

I got used to manually shifting.

Still now back in manual and I only select 2, 3 and 6.
