Sport button on and Sport button off

I have a 3.0si convertible and I have been keeping an eye on my fuel consumption for the past couple of weeks and been doing a comparison...

Basically I have been doing the same exact journeys and have been alternating between having the Sport button on and with it off..

The conclusion is that with the Sport button off my average MPG is 31 ish ... But with Sport button on its 33 ish.. :o

I have been trying my best to keep to the same speed and driving styles etc in both modes ..but always when I have the Sport button on it is definitely better on fuel...

Has anyone else noticed this..?

I don't use mine often enough to comment but if it was me the button would be on then (happy days) all round

Maybe less steering assistance (=less power drawn) + more use of torque in higher gears vs. revs in lower gears? It's also easier to pulse & glide (a hypermiling technique) with the Sport button on.

Some or all of the above may be utter bollocks.

I tend to be in sport when my foot is feeling especially heavy - can't add to it but it seems an odd result to find.

not much difference to be honest.

in an m you get a noticeable little bump of acceleration when you press the sport button if you're moving, nothing much seems to happen in a 3.0. that said, the steering feels a little less artificial.

if steering could be natural...?!

Yes, but my lower fuel consumption with the Sport mode on is due the more careful throttle dosage. It just requires careful blips and strokes of the foot, compared against flooring it halfway down.

Please tell me this gain is with a manual. I can't imagine how this could be possible on an auto box. Even then it's hard to explain, though more attention to throttle input may have something to do with it.

My MPG goes up when I drive it "sensibly quick". Obviously I'm going quicker and would do more miles without working the engine hard. I found this out when my MPG increased on a semi-enthusiastic drive compared to my mighty careful commute to work.
Maybe you're carrying more speed with sport mode on and perhaps off the throttle more without realising it??

This is with a manual box 6 speed... I just find it strange that you can accelerate quicker, drive quicker with a faster response etc, yet be more economical .. I found also that when cruising at 70 the difference between having the button on or off really does make a difference in MPG with having it on the better MPG by up to 5 MPG more..??
I suppose this is down to less effort required when overtaking , accelerating and keeping up with speed..?

I wonder if the obc miscalculates in sport mode?
Takes its readings off the wrong map or something similar.
If it works from a calculation of throttle position and speed then if it doesn't change its calculation map but the fuelling map IS changed it will under read fuel consumption.

This is if your calculations are form the OBC.
Fill to Fill is the only way to go for accurate calculations (or empty to empty if you have a couple of jerry cans and a private airfield)

I see a big difference on my 1.8 when the sport button is on in performance terms - no proper testing but MPG goes down is my initial observations - I am now on 1500 miles and the car has loosened up nicely and the performance is great.

I find it comparable to the 2.0's and better than the 2.3 (2.5) auto I test and it certainly feels faster than the 2.5 auto - that said there is a performance drop on autos compared to VW where the auto on my scirocco was faster than the manual.

I was considering the TCM box but I dont think I will be getting it now.

Definitely more fuel munched in sport mode in DCT models as the car upshifts later ie when the engine is at higher revs. Not sure how the mpg is better in sport in your case. Have you tried just driving in a single mode from a full tank and seeing when your fill up light switches on? I personally do not think the electronic mpg counter is particularly accurate.

In the meantime, on a dry, clear, sunny day, overzealous use of sport mode is highly recommended despite the pain on fuel economy costs.... :D

For a scientific answer look elsewhere, for a purely seat of the pants answer. It has to increase your fuel consumption.

But do you realy care that much, if so there's are Audi TT TDI out there, with you name on it. :P

I also found something similar on mine... But then i also record my mpg by the fuely app whenever i fill up and its the same!

So recon its just the obc miscalculating.

I just really like having the opportunity to select sport mode and enjoy the difference it makes.
The car looks great, sounds great and drives even better when you select sport.
Another excellent toy on the "Jonny Seven" of toys for grown ups.. :driving:

I manage 42.1 mpg with cruise at 65mph with sport button off.

With sport button on and cruise control again at 65mph my mpg was 38mpg.

It might work on some roads but on motor way with cruise its less economic with the sport button on

Is yours an auto ? In full auto, when you press the sport button the gearbox will kick down a gear and hold it there for much longer than with the button off... which will affect fuel consumption significantly. Not sure there's any point in using Sport on a motorway anyway tbh, manual or auto.
