Sport button issues

I know I’ve been on about it before but this sport button is doing my head in
It doesn’t light up when you press it but does light momentarily when when you turn on ignition to start the car
When you move the shifter to the left for manual mode the sport indicator on the dash comes on but button still doesn’t light
I’ve been told shifting the lever is the way you put it in to sports mode but if that’s the case why do we have a button?
Also when you shift the lever left can you drive it as an auto ( with sport mode ) or is it then in the manual mode?
Any help to clarify this would be appreciated

I've often wondered about this.

My non-scientific conclusion, just going by the seat of my pants, is that if I push the stick to the left, the gearbox goes into an auto sport mode but then moving the stick forward or back forces it into manual shifting mode (I can change gear with the stick or paddles. )

If I press the sport button, I can let the auto box change gears more sportily PLUS using the sport button seems to give a much sharper throttle response (i.e. more pronounced than when moving the stick to the left).

If your sport button is still working (but for some reason not lighting up) you will definitely notice the improved throttle response - you can't miss it.

Pushing the lever to the left put the gear box into sport mode. It doesn't light up the button. Pressing the button also stiffens up the steering and sharpens the throttle response.
Why not go out and drive it and try all these things out and see what happens?

So pushing the lever to the left will put it in a sport MANUAL mode only?
And using the straight auto is when you use the button to put it in and out of sport AUTO mode?
Pressing the button while driving in auto definitely makes no difference, no light no difference in performance, manual mode doesn’t tell me anything as there is no non sport manual mode to compare it with
I just can’t get clarification on how to use it
,the owners manual doesn’t help and I don’t want to do damage to it messing around while I’m driving

I’ve taken your advice and given it a run and realised that shifting the lever left puts it In sport mode or you can use the manual shift if you wish which is great but what then is the button for?
It seems superfluous

What is your battery like?
These cars really like a battery in good condition and can throw up some strange electrical gremlins.
Your sports button is definitely not working, you really notice the difference when it's pressed in auto mode.

As mentioned, pressing the sport button (when it works) makes an unmistakable difference to the feel of the car.
Have you scanned the car to see if any modules are showing a fault code ?
