Split Bung

As the previous owner of my newly acquired motor (05 2.2 SE) very kindly let me have a set of plugs and air filter for the car I thought I would set about and fit them yesterday.

After I had finished had a good look around the engine bay and came across what I would describe as a split rubber bung,

I have attached a couple of images can anyone please advise what the hell this is and what it does, as it currently cant be doing much in the its in.

Its on the passenger side towards the rear of the engine.

That's it item 17 I think, any idea what the hell it does?

at a guess nothing, BMW been lazy and used a head off another engine that had somet connected, other engines have some pipe on smaller port

or maybe to measure vacuum been produced
