Spinning noise from rear while driving.

Hey guys,

I bought a 2008 Z4 2.0L M sport recently however i've been hearing a constant spinning noise coming from the rear when i'm driving.
My first initial thought was that it was the rear wheel bearings. However a mechanic reckons that its the differential.
Does anyone have any idea what it might be?

I'd really appreciate a reply.

Thanks
Alex

Not sure i follow, if a mechanics diagnosed is there some reason why you aren't convinced they're right?

The mechanic didn't diagnose it, he assumed that was the case hence why i thought i'd ask.
I wondered whether anyone had a similar problem.

Oh right, I thought you meant he'd been out in it. In that case I'd start by checking it's not something simple and cheap/free to fix. It could be a bent disc protection plate catching, which you can easily bend back. Or even something caught between the disc and the pad like a stone. Ive even seen this sort of noise when part of the rear brake shoe mech has broken in the rear drum. The diff bearings going in vehicles fitted with n series engines isn't unheard of I've seen it myself on a few e9x 318I (same engine you have)and a 320d but it's still fairly rare so hopefully it's something else.
