Spin over motor without starting.

Hi, my 2.5 M54 has not been started for 3 months whilst I have been in hospital (all say Ahhh!) and I would like to let it spin over without firing it up just to ensure that the oil is circulated before starting up. What do I need to disconnect to achieve this please? Rgds Martyn

Just check the oil is within spec (not diabolically low). Disconnect the fuel pump fuse (should be 19 & 33). Then just crank it? :)

Any particular reason for not wanting it to fire up. Three months is hardly a long time for a modern engine with synthetic oil in it, to stand. :)

Drain down of oil is going to occur quite quickly and a micro film will still be sat between wear surfaces after 3 months or even longer, so I wouldn't worry about priming the oil. The only thing I'd avoid for the first start-up is sub zero temperatures where the oil would be extra heavy.

I've taken my Zed off the road (garaged on smart battery tender) for three winter months for the past ten years, the only things that suffered from being left completely unused has been brake calipers sticking and the fuel pump becoming noisy, both through standing. So I'd probably want the fuel pump run-up as well TBH. Better still get someone to give the car a drive and get it hot, but that may not be practical.
Good luck with your recovery

Thanks both, gentle start up it is then. Hopefully later today. Can't take it out yet but I will ensure it gets up to temp before switching off. Thanks again, Martyn.

3 months not a problem at all, just start it and make sure the oil gets fully up to temperature before switching off again if you don’t plan on driving it yet.
