That must be an England thing, we don't have parishes or anything like that.

The reason I know is our village Parish Council started doing this about 7 years ago. Volunteers had to attend a couple of hours training at Northants Police HQ prior to operating the hand held speed gun. It is only done where there is a perceived problem with speeding people, usually in the 30 mph built up area.

A do gooder can't send out a letter as they can't get your details simply from your reg.

Getting a letter giving you ticking off sounds highly unlikely to me. My experience is that if they catch you breaking the law they will do you no questions asked. Why the hell would they spend the time and effort putting a unit out there, catching people, then just sending them a letter saying "naught, naughty, now don't do that again or else". Are you sure the person isn't talking crap just to make their otherwise boring life seem a little more rock n' roll?

Edit: Just seen Lillywhite post. That must be an England thing, we don't have parishes or anything like that.

Na hes just very lucky I was with him 3 times when they have pulled him over, different police officers each time. Makes me mad sometimes though because I know if i go over slightly they would give me fine and 3 points.

I don't recommend this however. :D I used to work in the same company as this guy many years ago.

I wouldnt use a red one lol

Thats evil tho :)

My aunt had one of these letters recently, and there was a thread on here not too long ago about the same thing happening to someone on a romp, so it does happen.

I suppose the way to view it is as a shot across the bow.

I have been VERY lucky in the past to keep my licence, let alone point free!

A bit of education on a speed awareness course has slowed me right down (along with getting a bit older).

No excuses in built up areas, pet hate are dickheads speeding around car parks, motorways are boring unless doing dangerous speeds, country roads are good fun but got to be wary of cyclists/horses/sheep etc.

If I had to guess how many times I have been pulled over it would probably be in the 20's.

Only been pulled once in the Z in over 3 years and I deserved it! Traction fully off, roof down, empty roundabout and unmarked copper just out of my sight :driving:

I got caught by a fixed camera in Leicester city on Xmas eve. Camera clocked me at 41mph in a 30 zone, it was a fair cop. It's a dual carriageway with no pedestrian pavements, just does not feel like a 30 zone! I saw the camera lights flash twice as I went through so it was no surprise when the letter arrived.

I'm just hoping they will offer me the speed awareness course instead of the points and £100 fine. No point arguing.

Was it the one on Tigers Way just down from the Tiger's stadium? The fixed camera there got me doing 39 in a 30 on a dual carriageway and I got offered the speed awareness course at a location not from the Hobby Horse pub in Syston.

Fingers crossed you get the same offer!

Yep, you got it. I was going in the direction away from the stadium, towards the station.

Course in Syston would be good for me, l live close by in Barrow Upon Soar. Hey, are you the guy from Rothley with a car like mine? :)

He's very lucky he didn't get banned for 50 in a 30.

Some statistics for you:

At 20 mph 5% will die
At 30 mph 45% will die
At 40 mph 85% will die

You sayin' that when I t-boned that van with my Harley in a 40 mph zone, that I was in the lucky 15% ?
Sweet !
I feel very special now.
Well medicated but special.
Cheers Tom

I am indeed the guy from Rothley with exactly the same spec Zed. I keep an eye out for you on the A6 dual carriageway and in Barrow (I pop into the Navigation and Hunting Lodge now and again for a drink) but have never seen you. You won't have seen me as my Z has been tucked away in the garage since October for winter. I'm waiting for a dry sunny day to get it out on a run to give the battery a charge.....assuming it starts!

I'm often in the Navvie and the Lodge, but both are in walking distance of my house so the zed is rarely seen there and I'm more likely to be driving the wife's white TT at this time of the year. I do get the zed out at least once a week weather permitting.

The other thing about the speed awareness course was when they covered stopping distances.

They showed the video of the kid bouncing a ball on the pavement, and it bouncing into the road, and the kid running into the road to catch the ball, in front of a car.

There point was that a car travelling 30MPH on that road would've been able to stop in time, whereas travelling 35 or 40, due to the increased stopping distance, then it wouldnt stop before reaching the kid.

Whilst this is true, it only applies if the kid runs out in front of the car at a certain distance! If it runs out directly in front of you, even doing 30 will hit it. If it runs out half a mile in front, then you will stop.

However, tie this into the figures above, and it makes sense...cos its the speed at which the impact is made that counts (well, if an impact is unavoidable).

My initial thought of the little scrote should be more careful probably isn't politically correct!

I think 30mph zones are there for a reason most of the time. It is precisely because there are more pedestrians, more children and greater potential for a pedestrian to come into contact with a car. The only exception is when local authorities change speed limits to some ridiculous level for the road without any real reason or explanation. For example, there is a stretch of dual carriageway on the A610 near J26 of the M1 on the way to Ikea where it is 40mph. 40mph!!! There is hardly ever anything on it, no real dangers like junctions or traffic lights, no residential properties or pedestrians at all and then inexplicably after about a mile, it reverts to 50mph which still seems 10mph too slow. I'd love someone to explain the logic behind that one to me.

Just for the sake of comparison, residential area speed limits here in Japan (on roads immediately flanked by houses etc., often without even a sidewalk) are usually 30 ~ 40 km/h. That's only approximately 18 ~ 25 mph.

:D

Did you react to say that a powerful sports car, with Michelin PSS and powerful brakes will stop much sooner from 40 than a 7 year old vauxhall Zafira would at 30-35?
