Speeding fine & Points...

Hi All,

Unfortunately managed to pick up a speeding ticket from last weekend, £100 for the privilege.... but I wondered if anyone knew how much my insurance is likely to go up with 3 points on it?!

I haven't had points before, just the nice chit chat with other fellow speeders! Has anyone been in this situation with a 3.0 coupe, 9 years NCB?

Also assume points last for 3 years...or is it 2 years?

it's probably not going to go up at all.. most insurance companies just don't care about 3 points for speeding (depending on the SP code).

And they last for 3 years on your license, after which you can pay to remove them, but insurance companies ask for at least 5 years.. sometimes 7....

Interesting! I was expecting a £100-200 increase.

When you say you have to pay to remove them, is that just the DVLA for the updated docs?

The endorsement is 'spent' (under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act) after 5 years, but the points are 'spent' (under the same act) after 3 - and this is why the courts can only take the last 3 years of points for totting up.

After 5 years you can 'legally' claim to have none, due to them being expunged from your record. There was a case in 2003 regarding DD points that remain on your licence for 11 years, but the case said you don't have to disclose them as they were 'spent' after 5 years under the ROHA (and can sue if they refuse to insure/pay out if this is the reason).

However, the MIB may have a note that you declared some points last year from 5 years ago, so why are you not declaring them now from 6 years ago :headbang:

I wouldn't risk it myself for the nominal increase in premium.

One of the most ridiculous and confusing things i've ever heard of.

Yet another genius idea from the pen pushers...

Yup that's it. It was the 5 that threw me. That's the period the insurers ask about.....legally comes off your counterpart, physically, after 4 years...
