Speed Vs Economy, What would you do?

Just found out I've got to go be in London to pick up a Travel Visa for work, my plan is to drive down on Sunday and stay with friends in Surrey then struggle into London on the Monday morning, it's about 380miles door to door so do-able on 1 tank of fuel if I take it easy (stick to speed limits etc) or do I say sod it and drive faster and accept I need to stop for fuel and get there maybe 20 mins quicker.
I know which way I'm leaning but just wondered what others would do when faced with the same senario.

Arrive 20 mins earlier and spend a bit more on fuel. Speed wins every time! :)

RichardG - why do you need to be there in person for said visa?
When i needed a VISA for work travel to India (and later on this year for Russia) my PA has always sorted everything out - i just hand my passport over, sign a letter and its done!

Depends where you are coming in from, but M4/M40, you can park at Westfield, Shepards Bush for 2 hours free and then £2 an hour during the week, get the tube outside....under 20 minutes pretty much anywhere from there. The run into Shepards Bush is very easy traffic wise. But I drive mine into town, often it's just easier (despite the clutch starting to cause foot ache after a few hours!). I also have a secret spot in Westminster where I can park from 4pm on Friday to 8am on Monday absolutely free, a 2 minute walk to Westminster tube...but I am never giving up that little secret

:)

Agree with the above, wheres the visa for? Visa services will often do the running about for you and the fees will be less than a 400 mile round trip

Can't we designate it a Z4M Only zone ? 8)

I live in London, Ontario and to go downtown from my house is a 10 minute drive :)

just had to say it :headbang:

on thursday this past wee I drove thru Chicago, coming in from the north side to the east side of Chicago, I nearly got a nervous break down. Chicago drivers are mad to say the least ...... glad to be home in little London town :)

Cheers,

20 mins saving is not worth getting a speeding ticket for

Each country has different requirements. I know from my own experiencethat the USA wants you to attend in person so that they can interview you face to face.

Stick to 70, relax and enjoy the ride, the actual time difference will be negligible, you just wont have the stress of having to break every 30 seconds, because some idiot in a white van pulls out on you doing 60. Gosh I so hate people stuck in the middle lane.

Drove around the M25 last Monday, the 4 lane section going clockwise to Heathrow, the outside two lanes were chocker, with the two inside lanes being relatively empty :headbang:

and don't get me started with all the holidaymakers heading South on the M5, who got their driving license from Walt Disney

If I absolutely had to drive to London (It's "home" for me and I'm in Brum) I'd drive to the outskirts and tube it in, armed with iPod and a good book. Job done.

My favourite parking spot is Perivale, there's a couple of places a five minute walk from the station that are free to park. Central line 30 mins to Central London (NottingHill Gate \ Paddington)

I'm still in the Honeymoon phase with my Zed so I'm driving silly distances, reckon it's got about 1k miles left before I start treating it as a weekend toy :driving:

Love the way this is still getting the odd response almost 2 years after I initially asked the question, ironically it looks like I might have to the same trip again shortly but to a different embassy this time.

wow 380 from a tank, ive owned 3 2.5 z4 before and never ever got more than 340 from a tank, normally 310. even from right full to filling with 48l (so i think I was lucky not to run out). saying that I normally drive at the speed limit +10% and all that. Dont thrash the gears, so would be 2 4 and 6 (dont bother with 1).

I was driving in California a few years back and I decided to push the fuel gauge as far as possible before stopping for the day. When I finally was on E and decided to stop at the next exit I discovered a power outage..No Gas, No Motel check in, No Food. I decided to try another 20 miles to the next exit and hope the power would be on. I was lucky to make it, found gas, food and a motel but it was a stressful 20 miles.
Ever since I am much more cautious. I fill before the gauge reaches 1/4 as you never know what situation you might encounter.

Another thought is the fuel pump is cooled by the fuel in the tank and it's not a good idea to run the tank empty. In answer to your question, I would drive to my hearts desire and plan a fuel stop before entering London traffic. I did not buy this car to save fuel.

Enjoy your trip...
