Hi Guys

Do you all have a spare key which limits the car to 50mph? One which you can give to people taking care of your car (garages, airport parking etc)?

How many keys come with the z4?

I'm hopefully picking up a 2003 z4 soon and it comes with only two keys, one of which is this speed limiting key. Just want to check this is the correct set of keys.

I can't find any reference to this speed restricted key when performing a search. :!:

Thanks.

Your Zed shoudl come with 2 full keys and a wallet key.

No speed control functionality in keys

If you're not getting the 2 main keys insist on the dealer / seller supplying as they are iirc about £100 each and of course main dealer supply only

Ha, I've seen both keys, but the seller seems to be under the impression that the car won't do more than 50mph using the second key. :)

I have two metal keys and a plasic 'spare' key which is kept in my wallet, which I assumed was either a valet key or a 'template' key for making copies.

molar - then you are missing one of the main keys... Don't be fooled by a seller telling you it only comes with 2. It should be as in mmm-fives' photo.

mmm - you should know better. The wallet key is for emergency manual use. You can't make working copies as the transponder inside the key won't be recognised. Only replacements can come from BMW from th elimited set held a the factory. One they have gone it requires a full lock change.

(Of course a template can be cut to open the door, but that will set off the alarm)

It may just be hidden in the manual wallet, thats where mine was tucked away...?

I can confirm that the car key memory does not have a speed limiting feature. Off my memory they can be configured thusly:
Remote Enable
Temperature Correction
Fan Correction
Recirc Memory ("Foot-Flap" is the literal translation so educated guess!)
Auto Locking at X km/h

Ed - Are you mixing up the emergency and main keys?

Molar indicates he is getting just one main key and the emergency. I doubt a main key would be hidden in the wallet - more likely lost or damaged by the seller.

I also did not know the emergency key was in any way programmable? Mine aren't.

Thanks for all the info, I really appreciate it 8)

I'm finding the concept of a speed limiting key really funny now but still think its a good idea. Maybe BMW should introduce one?

I will double check with the seller that all the keys are present. I'm sure I did see two main keys but want to make sure everything is right including the emergency key. Phew, good job I checked with z4-forum!

Lol, what are all of those? My previous car was a little less well spec'd when it came to gadgets and gizmos. You get one hell of a lot for your money on a second hand z4!

Good luck with the new car.
You haven't seen a quarter of what you can programme. Most of the features are car specific with just a few extras on each key

You can do burnouts at zero MPH and write the car off by hitting a wall at 40MPH no problem....doubt it would be much use to be honest!

key programming

there should be an option that should sense your return home journey, at this point your partner should be signalled to be go and get the tea ready

Yeah i assumed he had 2 remote keys...

Im pretty sure you can get the seat to automatically remember/move to each keys seating position also... Im having a play to try to get this to work (not that id let anyone else drive it) :P

Hopefully i wont 'brick' my car like i almost did my Iphone :D

Indeed you can. Upon unlocking the seat moves to the specific settings of that key. Probably the best feature of it. I also have the seats own memory programmed to match the key, so if a mechanic adjusts the seat with the key in the ignition I can revert to my setting with the button and then let the key 'catch up'.
