Speed limiter removal?

Has anyone done this, and if so, who did you get to do it and how much?

From my searching I've only found performance chips for about £600 which include limiter removal - only just bought the car, and don't want to performance chip it just yet!

Only interested as planning 2 trips to / through Germany this year, so it would be rude not to take the opportunity while over there

- does the limiter kick in at 155 exactly, or have people found it's a bit more relaxed than that? Any tricks to be used, eg can you get through it in 5th, or by pressing lots of buttons at the same time :P

Hi (again!) Alex,

I think you can get through it in 5th gear but I'm sure sixspeed will be along soon to confirm as he's a regular at the 'Ring... :D

Even with the limiter people have recorded 168 I think, possibly more but taking into account a little inaccuracy on the speedo.

Going through 5th certainly works, it definitely doesnt just give up at 155mph thats for sure.

ive had 165 shown & still pulling on mine - but i always assumed that was the usual 10% innacuracy, and a gps would probably have shown it as 155.

i also heard pretty categorically that the 5th gear thing doesnt work either..

if you enter the test mode on the speedo console thingy, there's a value for "actual speed" as well as speedo speed or whatever it's called.

=)

I've seen an indicated 170mph +.... I'm not sure these have a limiter tbh!

I've pulled past 155 in 5th, and also done the same in 6th from 140 or so. Pulled clean and strong well past 155mph.

i guess 170.5 would be 10%.. im sure someone on the old forum categorically said it was impossible... but maybe not...

Well I thought that - but then when I set the "limiter" beep to a certain speed, it goes off at exactly that indicated speed.

I would have thought the 155mph limit would work off what the perceived speed is by the car/ECU. I don't see why it would need a 10% leway.

It works that way because you set the limiter when the needle is a certain way around the gauge, then it beeps when the needle returns to that position. I'm assuming you set the limiter in the same way as you set cruise control.

The 155mph+10% thing is because the 155mph agreement allows a tolerance of +/-10%, so most performance car manufacturers use all of the +10% tolerance.

My old 3.0 went in 6th up to 163 Mph (GPS,not speedo). I ran out of road then so don't know what the real top speed would have been.

Not tried it with the M yet

Carl,

In my car I set the limiter in the Sat-Nav screen. I just select limiter and enter a numeric value for the speed (in mine I've set it to 105, in case I get a bit lead-footed whilst cruising on the motorway)...

Ah, I see. It's unlikely that the Sat Nav screen and the speedometer will be inaccurate in exactly the same way. Most of the speedometer inaccuracies come from the fact that it's driven by a coiled spring.

Indeed not. That was top down speed by the way.

Still got great memories of our sunny trip to Harz, with numb head top down cruising at speeds > 155 mph

Well I'll have the GPS with me in Germany, so if I get the chance, will see what she can do, and how inaccurate the speedo is :)

Time beams gave me 164mph last weekend at Bruntingthorp. Speedo was registering about 174mph. I was redlining in 5th and still pulling.

Limiter....what limiter? :)

Well, the speed limiter didn't turn out to be an issue - German roads were all very busy, most of them had road works with v narrow lanes, and full of lorries :(

- fastest I managed on my trip to German GP was a fairly easy indicated 150 on way through Belgium, top down. Car felt very stable

Belgium? Hmm, careful there as the speedlimit is 120 km and they have central reservation speed traps ...
