Speed Cameras

Went through a speed camera on sunday at 55mph (Limit was 50mph).... I was going towards the camera and the road had lines on both sides. Can you be done going towards it? My understanding was that you could only be done if the camera flashed from behind?

Cheers

Friend of mine who's a police tells me off if I slow too much going toward a camera as they only work from behind. The standard yellow boxes that is, not sure if newer ones work differently.

You were probably only doing 50 anyway - not that I'd recommend playing the percentages!

It was a yellow box... Why would there be lines on both sides if they dont work? 55 was with the % off :(

What were you thinking - they're bright yellow and it was facing you :poke:

No expert, but I think you'll be fine - you would have certainly seen a flash and that, I believe, is they key thing.

Camera was not turnable.

Yip cant believe i didnt see it.. Very annoyed :headbang: It was very bright (Sunshine) so wasnt sure if it flashed.

A Gatso can only flash you from the rear. If it flashes you when you're driving towards it then it isn't operational. The reason there are white lines on both sides of the road is to catch you if you are overtaking at over the speed limit. The Truvelo cameras photograph you from the front though so you would have to ascertain which type of camera you went past. If you were in Strathclyde Police area then I'm pretty sure they only operate the Gatsos as fixed cameras although I couldn't swear to that.

Just had a look and i think it was a Truvelo. The only thing i have going for me is that all the TRUVELO pics on Google are on the side of the road as you drive towards it where as the one i passed was on the other side... Fingers crossed... I was near Stoke.

But remember Truvelo operate using Infra red so there's no flash.

They can be on either side. The Truvelo on the A446 past the Belfy is normally on the RHS but can be rotated so it can operate either direction

Nice to get some sympathy isn't it

Craig74, I have no scientific evidence to back this up, but I reckon that the vast majority of cameras on open roads are Gatso so you should be OK. I see the Truvelo cameras more in urban areas, 30 limits and stuff, although I understand they work fine with higher speeds too.

Mike - I can point you to plenty on the open roads. I hate them as with a Gatso you have the distance approaching the camera to sort any indiscretion out, with Truvelu you'r caught approaching it

Of course camera warning technology is the way to go.

How long will we be allowed to have that? More and more countries in Europe now quarter and hang you if you have so much as a TomTom with points of interests on them ...

We'll be OK over here as long as they are "marketed" as safety cameras then there's nothing they can do about it.
