Speed Camera Detectors

This is what I use. It has already paid for itself 10 times over. Perhaps y'all have something similar on the other side of the pond.

I used to have a laser speed camera detector, but was put off a but by the fact that they can only detect the laser when it is pointing at you, which kind of means it's a bit too late!

Its a matter of personal choice but IMHO radar detectors are of very limited use since there are very few radar guns in use these days.

I'm not sure what use a laser detector would be in reality because I'm pretty certain that until it can actually 'see' the beam it can't detect anything, and at that point the beam will be 'seeing' you.....

And of course, drive off the ferry into France with one and you will lose your vehicle if stopped.

Relies on picking up scatter, but limited in my experience.

Laser even worse; as you say, by the time its picking a laser up, the laser is picking you up too!

I use an old BEL Euro 550i which cost me £400 about 4 years ago, it's saved my bacon twice I can remember, and very reliable/configurable. It also has a discrete radiator mounting option. I bought it because at the time it was the only one that picked up laser and radar and worked backwards as well. You had better have quick reactions if you get a laser alert though, you're more likely to get rear-ended by a false alarm. I also use a portable GPS PDA with TomTom and POI Warner/Pocket GPS database, and try to stay within the speed limits, but travelling about a lot it takes the patience of Job not to stray now and again, it's just that momentary lack of concentration on an unfamiliar road that can lead to 3 points, not advocating speeding or anything.

To sum up, worth having for a little bit of peace of mind, but if you get it, USE it! :)
