Speed Camera detection iPhone apps

So have you tried waze. Yet? I can't recommend it enough. I also have the full expensive tom tom nav app and used to have the bespoke cradle. It doesn't get used now as waze is far superior IMO. You can also set it up in Bluetooth so that it only plays alert sounds rather than map directions

I did not try Waze yet, I did download it but reading the T&C put me off for now.

I just googled the issues you may be referring too. I thought the comments made by the reviewer were pretty heavy although the user comments seemed to balance it out

I did not read any reviews, just the t&c about logging all your travel movements.

My concern is that like in NL that they force the company to release the data and that it can be used against you.

Just looked at the T&C from Waze which I was not happy with. It will record all your journeys and is linked to your account (i.e. you) whether you create a user name or not.

Reason I am not happy about that thought is that the Dutch government have forced Apps manufacturers to provide all data they hold so it can be checked for employee benefit purposes. This was for parking apps where you pay with your app for parking and they are employer provided, they want to check to see how many private journeys are made with a company van for example.

The fact that they can ask that information means it is a small step to asking about your trip info, i.e. how fast did you drive where and so on … I don't trust any government to not abuse that information.

Sorry didn't read that part of your post

There is an options to turn of sending logs of your drive and actions you performed including previous drives to save consuming data. That might resolve your concerns

But if you read their T&C on the app on the phone, it specifically says that you can not use the software unless you agree to the t&c and that part of this, is to collect all your data of all your travel (as you go), and even says that whether you create a user name or not, the data is still collected and can still be traced back to you (via your download via the iTunes account I guess.

I may be oversensitive about this, but having read the article about the parking app in NL it seemed there is nothing that a company can keep as a company item only, once a government asks for it, they can then compare your travel to distance (average speed camera in a way), they can also see where you have been.

Not quite - they can see where you are at a point in time, but not all signal for all phones is tracked continually.

Ok, tried Waze today and it did not work at all for some reason. What I did, was switch it on and it showed me on the map where I was. I put the phone down and drove passed the first camera - nothing. Got my wife to check the phone and it showed the camera on the map, but never mentioned anything and the sound option is on.

Second camera - the same. Upon checking the phone, it just seems like Waze has not caught up at the time yet.

How do you use this?

Does your phone go to sleep? As mine does and when you unlock it again, I am not sure if the app has found its location again?

Ok I think I know what your problem was. Did you put a destination in? It's sat nav with all the other bits. I can't remeber if mine makes alerts if I dint have a destination set

No destination set no. Just switch it on, and leave it in the cup holder.

When checking the screen, it shows the camera on there once I had passed it and parked up a 100 yards away, but it never mentioned anything to me.

I think you might have to have a destination in to get the alerts. Also depends how you have the sound connected as well How is the setting for sounds in the menu phone speaker or Bluetooth? If you have Bluetooth was it connected with sound down? I usually always have a destination as I am building up scores ;)

I have noticed a bug. If I make a call I have to reset it to get the community notifications

Problem with Road Angel is that I would need 6 of them, whilst I have the iPhone always with me.

The program made some sort of musical sound in the middle of nowhere at some point, almost like a fanfare sound - no idea what for.

It was not connected to bluetooth this time. Volume was on (checked settings in the app) and the phone volume was on as I could hear my email ping on receipt.

I don't think I can set sound anywhere else though?

Might be relating to this point (did a Google) :

Why speed cams are not announced in the voice prompts?
187
Wazers are notified of speed cams only when approaching a real speed cam (not a dummy speed cam) at an excessive speed.

I was not speeding at the time ….

The fanfare was you collecting a sweet or coin (I think)

When Waze came out quite some time ago it was a little like pacman where the more roads you drove down the more little sweets you collected. I think this was deemed a little dangerous as people were likely to be paying more attention to the screen than the road. I'd forgotten about Waze when I change from andriod to iphone and it was only within the last 18 months I started to use it again. I did notice the pacman like game had been dumbed down somewhat.
