Speed Camera alerts

Afternoon all, I'm not sure this is the best place for this thread, but couldn't see any other obvious place to put it.

I'm interested in a Speed Camera Alert app / device. I'd like something very simple, very easy to use, needs very little setup or input from the driver and isn't distracting. Choices include using the Cyclops App for the iPhone. Or something dedicated like these shown here http://www.speedcamerasuk.com/speed-camera-detector-guide.htm

Does anyone have any exerience of Cyclops / these devices and recommendations ?

A friend of mine swears by the R.A. gem+ due to having real time data, however it is quite a large unit.

I've always been quite fond of the Pogo Alert plus myself after playing around with the unit (though never bit the bullet myself)

I've stuck to apps with databases, from the Copilot database and then moving on to Trapster as it offered real time info.

Unfortunately Trapster has now ceased to exist, and I've been experimenting with Waze for the past few weeks. Currently I've been pretty impressed with it.

If I recall correctly, TomTom have a speed camera app for iOS and give a year's free trial so that's worth a shot too. Of all the iOS apps that I've used, I did like it for it's minimal interface but would probably favour Waze owing to the real time traffic data as well.

Thanks Neil, Waze looks very interesting and I will look into it throughly. I hadn't realised that this did speed cameras.

One possible downside is that it looks very fussy. Lots going on. I'm really interested in something that does 1 thing really well and everything else is distracting.

Where do you put the phone in the car whilst using this app ?

No problem Andy.

Mine usually sits by the Ashtray, though I've been looking into a Brodit mount now.

I'm not so keen on the interface for Waze, but its functionality more than makes up for it in my opinion.

I don't like with Waze that you don't get a warning if:

- You did not plan a route
- You are not over the limit

I would rather be warned every time instead of not getting anything as at that time I am under the limit. What if you plan to just overtake ...

You don't find any issues picking up GPS when sat in the ashtray well within the car ? I was thinking it would need to be on a bracket in the center of the car at best and stuck on the windscreen at worst.

In my previous 35i I used google maps on occasion to locate shops / landmarks that are much harder to lookup in the BMW nav, and I always found the GPS signal was poor when operating as a passenger in the car without holding it forward.

Thanks PVR. Those 2 points make Waze useless to me. Especially point 1 as I am never going to be setting a route on it.

Has to be quick, simple and unobtrusive.

It really surprised me, so I tried multiple times passing known cameras and it does not warn unless I set a route.

Yeah, I set routes quite a lot of the time, but it's still not good enough. Still trying to find a replacement B2, but will probably cave and get a Gem+ at bonus time :(

The cyclops app is great - I have only recently started using it but for £3.99 a year it's great value.

Agree regarding the price, it's from a top player in this area too and would be a big bonus not to have expensive subscriptions and yet another gadget in the car.

Do you know if it can be used on an iPhone at the same time as the media system is playing music from it ?

I use the TomTom app at the moment, but when a call comes in, there is nothing on the screen anymore re TomTom, and I have to manually switch back to the App after the call. That means touching the phone which would make it illegal.

I've purchased a Kenu Airframe from the Apple shop this afternoon, going to use this in conjuction with my iPhone and the Cyclops app to begin with. This seems to offer everything I need at a minimal cost with very little extra to distract.

Good solution, I need something to put the phone in. Let us know how you get on with that one.

I have one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Novus-Piccolo-Speed-Camera-System/dp/B0028K2NCS ad it sits under my centre armrest, its saved me a few times. Unfortunately they are not available any more and the updates have now ceased, so I am looking for something similar.

Love reading this type of thread. Kind of makes being a slow old git and living in Cornwall, seem so much better, than it probably is.... :D :P

go on you know you want to be the person to say the what the best way to avoid speed traps is .....

I use the TomTom live 1000 with live traffic updates and constantly updated speed cameras ........

Btw if anyone is interested, I noticed last week that all the speed cameras on the north bound A90 Dundee to Aberdeen have all been uprooted and replanted 300 mts earlier ........ it means that instead of a 350 mt warning, all you get is a 50 mt warning .......... will take a few days before TomTom updates it ........ worth noting.

Not for cameras but I'd like one of these for those sneeky undercover plods 8)
