speed awareness course

The advice given regarding insurance is to answer their questions.
Have you got points? No
If they ask have you been on a speed awareness course, then you have to say yes. If they do not ask, there is no reason to tell them.
I checked online before anyway and they were not interested.

Although advised to tell you insurance company, it not a legal requirement according to my colleague who attended the course.

Correct

The guy giving the one I was on said to not tell my insurance company even if they asked outright.

Same here. He said they could never find out as its not held on the same database as driving convictions.

Debatable though as if it is part of the insurance companies T&Cs, you are entering a contract without providing the "correct" details, providing a "get out" clause for the policy (third party they can never get out of, but they can try to get the costs back from you).

I don't buy into the statistics raping of selective data sets. It is easy to bend any statistics to provide a result you want.

That's why you really need to read all the Ts & Cs. But if they draft the contract it is up to them to make sure they ask the right questions - if not the legal doctrine of "contra proferentum" applies (in simple terms if the party that drafts the contract leaves any ambiguity then any judgement on that issue will go against them).

Oh dear, I must have spent too many years spent handling insurance claims. :(
