Spec Question

Looking for my first Z4 which should be a 03/04 plate. Have some questions on the cars spec.

I really like the idea of a 3.0 as the car seems to come with more extras plus the price between the engine size doesn't seem to vary much.

On the 3.0, M Sports Suspension comes as standard. How does this affect the ride. Worried it will make the hard ride even harder.

The other question is the option of the New England leather upholstery which was a £1,115 from new. What is the different between this leather and the others plus how can you tell if it is fitted.

What would members recommend are the most desirable extras to have.

Thanks.

Not sure you are right on the M Sport suspension - sure someone else will confirm. On facelifts, I believe the M sport suspension is on the Sport variant and not all 3.0 models.

Top of my list of things was heated seats - they make all the difference in the world if you are into roof downing when it's not summer! So if you fit that - definitely get heated seats!

M sport suspension is standard, certainly on the age range you're after.
Yes it makes the suspension harder, but you'd never know. Rim size and removing runflats has far more effect.

Options are a personal matter, but I'd look for:

Xenon lights as halogen are useless and fitting HID's is likley to be ever harder.

sat nav - because of the integration of items, screen, etc.

Sports seats - way better and more supportive

Heated memory seats for Winter and if multiple drivers

Hardtop, although can be purchased later.

Well when I was looking for mine I thought I should go for a car with all the extras but when I looked at a car with all these I realised that I didn't need folding mirrors or cruise control as I would not use them and as for the sat nav unit! I thought it looked so dated and awkward with awful graphics and a dust magnet so I changed my mind on thoses extras.

I got a 3.0si sport which has heated memory sports seats and of course the spec on the 3.0si includes the multi function wheel and sports suspension so it is perfect, as for the sports suspension being too hard a ride it just isn't I find the ride on mine so comfortable :)

Others will disagree with my comments on those options as we all have our opinions but I am glad I didn't go for those extras heated seats and a sports model are all you need :)

Toys are nice to have and are good for resale value, but remember you will pay more for them to start with and old technology tends to go wrong and costs a fortune to fix (think how often things like mobile phones break which are only a year or two old, and it's no surprise that things like sat navs start playing up after a few years.)

I tend to buy simple cars these days for that exact reason. I once had a fully loaded 540i and as nice as the toys were to have, they were expensive and difficult to fix when they started going wrong. Things like screens failing are very common.

Get a wind deflector, I had a constant stiff neck before I had mine and if you have to buy one, drilling holes in the headrest is terrifying, so terrifying, I couldn't bring myself to do it, got a friend to do it and went for a walk. Sport seats, better support and look 20 times better. Sport suspension, stopping at pace against a 2.5 se, he had to break way before me and his back end was like Jennifer Lopez's, roundabouts, he couldn't cut the mustard, it was only his raw speed on the straight that helped him escape for a second or two and I've got the hairdressers version. The bumps are outweighed by the smile when you see a roundabout coming.

For me the must haves were

Xenons
Upgraded stereo
108 style wheels
Heated seats

After I bought the car I upgraded to sports seats.

If I'm honest though, when I bought my car I hadn't realised how well spec'd it was. Not sure what I'd miss if it was taken away now. It's far too difficult to give a top 3 spec items

+1 to the heated seats.

The roadster experience is all about top down motoring in my opinion. Heated seats + wind deflector + blowing hot air round the cabin means you can get the roof down even in the winter and enjoy the car.
