Speakers

Not sure if this should go in this forum but Im looking to upgrade my sound sysyem and was wondering where all the speakers are located, I can obviously see the tweeters and mids in the door and also the two behind the seats. I was fiddling with the balance the other day and it sounded like there were some under the dash/glovebox?? Can anyone tell me how many there actually are and where abouts they are. I read somewhere there were 10 but can only spot the 6 mentioned.

Im just looking to change the headunit first but may upgrade the speakers depending on the result.

The standard system only has 6, only the upgrades have 10 :thumbsdown:

Have you got the storage bins behind the seats too?

Cheers Mike, yeah Ive got the storage behind the seats. I could swear I heard more than the 6?? Oh well, less hastle to swap them out then at least.
 
Thats where other 2 speakers/subwoofers should go in 10 speaker setup.
I have:
2 mids - leg room area/ under the dash
2(left/right) speakers - doors.
2(left/right)tweeters - doors
2 mids - behind the seat
2 subs - behind the seat

All American Z4's had 10 speakers.
 
which means you dont actually have speakers in the doors but you do in the kickplates next to your feet.

All American Z4's had 10 speakers.

Do you know why BMW US did this ?????????????
 
AFAIK, the 2 variations of the 10 speaker system was: standard 10 speaker system (mediocre to average system) and upgraded (Carver) 10 speaker system that for approx $700 (sticker price) vastly improved the sound: speakers were upgraded to a higher output and more robust coupled with a more powerful amplifier. I've had both systems. And I have no idea why this scheme was marketed in the US.
 
Well, the standard 10 speaker system was underpowered for a roadster to begin with, I can only imagine the 6 or 8 speaker set up as woefully weak. I replaced the standard BMW system with an Alpine system which rocked. The Carver upgrade in my '06 was worth the additional cost...not that I got $700 worth of an upgrade but that the Carver system saved me from tearing the system out and replacing it. So, yeah, it was worth it. The only real weakness in both BMW systems are the tweeters. Terrible IMO. I replaced my with Rockford Fosgate high powered tweets. Me likes.

Adding the 12" sub with an Alpine 550 watt amp helped as well. :D
 
Mine is the basic 6 speaker and ive lived with it for 18+months and it's surprisingly good.. doesn't massively distort it just never goes loud enough, especially playing MP3 CDs with the roof down.

Time to change now though... I'll be looking at a couple of Alpine Amps, an active "slim" sub and a couple of speaker swaps.
 
I had the standard system, added the mids to the door panels,I have put a powered sub base behind the passeger seat and two inline Audison amps powering the front and rear independantly, last thing to do is change the speakers, but the standards sound much better powered than I thought they would, tho how long they will last, we will have to see :D
 
When it says no speakers in the doors does that mean theres nothing behind the grills?

I have speakers under dash 2, doors 2, tweeters 2, and behind the seats 2. No subs so that gives 8?

Im afraid the grills in the doors are just blanks on the standard system, so that only gives you 6
