Speakers...

Many speakers sound great in shops and especailly demo rooms....getting the to sound amazing in your living room is another matter. I can do it but it means re arranging the furniture, so i have not done it for ages.

I put up with 80 % for 99% of the time... as the the denon amp has a mic with it that can sep up your system pretty well.

It sounds best completely flat with the speakers in the right place though.....

I have heard of shops loaning out speakers OR bring a selection to your house for you to try! This may be a way forward.

I'm on my second set of KEF's now replaced my IQ series... i think they look and sound fantastic.

Not sure on your amp, but my speakers sounded noticeably better when i went up to thicker speaker cables from the flat ones i had before, and bi-wired them.

I got mine from richer sounds after they price matched best buy (during their closing down sale :D )

I'm not too up to date with gear these days but I'm running Rega speakers through a NAD amp, a setup I've had for about 10 years. These days I tend to use a PC and ITunes as the sound source.

Quad 11L/12L are worth a listen. Won't be as "Hifi" sounding as your 601's, but very accurate and the finish is exceptional. I like the Monitor Audio Silver's as well.

You could always pick up a pair of s/h 601s3's off ebay. I have s3s all round... the tweeter unit is a lot better than the s2 but apart from that they are very similar.

Well, just to update...

After reading the recommendations here and What Hi-Fi reviews, we popped along to Richer Sounds today with a shortlist of:

Q Acoustics 2020i
Monitor Audio Bronze BX2
Wharfdale Diamond 121
B&W 685

After a listen to the Q Acoustics and the Monitor Audio's, we plumped for the Monitor Audio as it sounded in the shop quite similar to our existing DM601s2's....

Well what can I say they are amazing :D They are barely even run in yet, and we are hearing things we never heard before (and no we don't have new hearing aids...)

Well pleased. In the end the B&W 685's were just a little too over the budget...

Thanks again for all the help & advice

I love this place :D

Excellent news! Those Monitor Audios have a fine reputation so very pleased to hear you got it all sorted in the end.

Now comes the enjoyment of hearing all your music like its the very first time again!

not really

it was just the shop, lol...

but they did say they would happily exchange within 2 weeks if we aren't happy and have kept the original packaging (which I always do anyway for speakers...) + we made sure the cats stayed well away from the boxes as they have a habit of eating them

exchange won't be required though as they sounds great :D
