Speaker Upgrade

Morning All,

I'm looking at updating the original speakers in the Zed, currently have the 6 speaker system but also want to add a Sub.

So I know the current sizes but speaking with a couple of suppliers they are not sure what will fit due to space. So my question is does anyone now a make that fits or the dimensions/depth of the speakers?

Footwell 6"
Door 4"
Tweeter 1"
Headrest 4"

Also I'm looking at adding a sub to the cubby hole behind the drivers seat, can you still get the fitting bracket and what size speaker/sub will it take?

Cheers

Garry

OK now I'm confused. Been speaking with a few more suppliers and found that Focal, Rainbow and Rockford Fosgate do custom fits for the 4" and tweeters (Quite Expensive). However they cannot find any reference to a 6" in the footwell, I now I have them as when I put my head in the footwell I can hear them, but the only information I can find is:

Standard audio: 6 speakers, no subwoofers, no speakers in the doors
Hifi: 10 speakers (including 2 subwoofers)
Top Hifi: upgraded 10 speakers (including 2 Carver technology woofers)

So not really shore what I have? as the 6 speaker says no door but I have them installed.

I have the 6 speaker and your measurements seem correct. Currently upgrading to add two 6.5" subs in the rear cubbys, but to do this you will need amps. There are two difficulties here. You'll need a high to low level (RCA signal converter) and you'll need to find an ignition live wire for the Amp feed (ideally from the stereo itself.

I'll also be upgrading the components and amping those also, only as I have some spare gear from my last car.

I am going to make custom mounts for the sub in the cubbys and use sound deadening, and the sub will usually perform better in an enclosure.

Awaiting sub arrival at the moment. I have done many other installs, so relatively confident, but never used a sub so small, so hoping for good results as the cabin is small.

I hope that helps!

Hi,

That's what I'm also considering doing, I've just replaced the stereo which has a sub pre-out so hopefully it just a matter of running the cables back.

What speakers are you using to replace the Door, Footwell and headrest?

Thanks

Garry

I have some bassface speaker, not the greatest, but when amped and run in the correct gain levels, they do give a good improvement over the OEM, (or at least did in my Impreza). I may need to make some MDF mounts for them, but not got around to investigating closely enough yet.

The subs I have ordered are these, I have no idea how good they are yet: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001L5FQ0M/ref=pe_385721_37986871_TE_item

I would suggest they are quite cheap, but aslong as they are not over run they should be fine.

Once they arrive (due today) i'll be having a go at the whole install.

I have also got hold of the DICE audio unit to allow external music sources and Bluetooth phone connection. Going to install that at the same time, but want to keep the OEM look of the car.

keeping an eye on this as looking to do the same, just not had enough time to look into it all yet

Hi Garry,

You don't have door speakers, the covers are there for the 10 speaker systems but the with 6 speaker system there's nothing behind them, just the speaker grilles. You also don't have 6inch speakers in the foorwell which is why they can't find any reference to them, IIRC they are 4 1/2 inch in the footwell. So the 6 speaker system has 2 'I think' full range in the footwell, 2 tweeters at the door tops and 2 full range behind the seats above the cubby bins. Hope that helps a bit.

I have the 10 speaker system in my car. With the amp and all that in the boot. If i was to get rid of it all would anyone be interested? And if so whats it worth?

Footwell takes 6.5" standard size.

Some pictures of the the install you mention in my thread here:

OK, so I've checked the speaker and can confirm that I only have the 6 speaker system.

Footwell
Tweeters
Headrest

Now to look at replacements, so footwell and tweeters are an easy choice. But the headrest seem a little to small, so either thinking about replacing them with 6x9 and locating them in the storage cubby's or installing new ones and adding a sub in the storage cubby's. What's peoples opinions of these options and has anyone done either of this?

I installed an old pair of 6.5s in the cubby holes and disconnected the rubbish standard ones, big improvement with no cost.

Changing the head rest speakers involves alot of work , most of the rear trim has to come off , putting new in Cubby's would be more straight forward if you want to go down that route

You don't need a high-low adaptor if you get the signal from the headunit (therefore replacing the factory hi-fi/carver amplifier)

Also, 4" in the doors are overrated. :D

A decent 2 way component with tweeters that can play nice and low will be more than you'll need.

So what would be the cheap and easy upgrade from the standard 6? Can anyone recommend a cheap brand/item?

When I mentally count how many speakers my car has I can only count 8.... Where are the other two?
2 headrest
2 subs
2 door
2 footwell

Google 'Sourcesounds' in Sheffield Garry, they did an early Z4 with a sub in the boot and 6x9's in the cubby's for fill with components up front, looked a nice install and might give you some ideas.
