Speaker upgrade

Hi all

I've spent a while searching the forum for info and found some good info but not everything I need.

I have a 2007 Coupe with business radio head unit and standard speaker set up. I think that means 2tweeters in the mirror housing, 2 speakers in the doors and another 2behind the seats. I have cubby holes behind the seats so the speakers are, I think, above that behind the mesh.

I'm looking to upgrade the speakers in the doors and the tweeters but trying to find which speakers will plug and play with minimal cutting of wires and trims is not easy.

From what I can gather, these will be good in the doors

As far as tweeters are concerned, I'm unsure. There are a few at 25-26mm which I think is the right size, but unsure if the grill on the tweeter is removable, or would need to be cut off.

And I know that I'll likely need some sort of adaptor plate to connect a 4screw speaker into the door card with the 3mounting points.

Can anyone confirm if the linked speakers would be suitable, and if anyone knows of suitable tweeters and adaptors I'd really appreciate some links.

Thanks in advance.

No speakers in the doors as standard, there is nothing behind the grilles. The woofers are in the footwell, by your ankles.

The “cheap as chips” upgrade is to get a pair of second hand mid-range, identical to the ones behind the headrest, and put these in the door blanks wired up to the tweeter feed (as they would be in the 10 speaker set up). For a proper job you can add sub-woofers in the cubbies behind the seats although you will need extra amplification for these.

Thanks
I've not removed the door card yet ...I just assumed there were speakers in there.
Any idea what that rear speakers are and I can get them installed into the door?

They are Phillips, bmw part number 65139143230, older versions are 65136950131, 65126915837. Readily available on eBay for not much outlay. They should fit straight in (physically) without any modification.

Great..cheers.
With mine being a facelift I reckon it'll be the newer speakers.

Thanks.

I have done the “install OEM door speakers” upgrade, as have many others. It brings extra mid-range into the cabin and is a definite improvement. Also cheap as chips (£20-30) and easy to do.

Last year I stripped out the 6-speaker system and installed a complete OEM 10-speaker set up, complete with HiFi amp. This gave a step change in performance and much more power. Plenty to cope with motorway speeds with the roof down. However, this was very time consuming, quite difficult and expensive (probably £500+ to assemble all the components).

But . . . I have just acquired a new to me Z4 with the DSP top HiFi, which is also 10-speaker but with proper sub-woofers and a digital amp. The sound is transformative compared to the standard 10-speaker system, but the effort to install it would be similar and the price of components slightly (£100?) more.

If you can get hold of a DSP audio loom, I would go for upgrading directly to the DSP set-up, which will blow you away.

That’s the correct loudspeaker, but don’t buy new ones from BMW. Buy a second hand pair off someone on here, or from eBay. If possible get a pair from a DSP car. They are better quality and may save you an upgrade later.

Unless you have a pre-Oct 2004 car it’s not plug and play. You will have to connect up to the tweeter (or splice into the tweeter wiring). On earlier cars, the wiring and connector should already be in place.
