Speaker upgrade

As the title says I've done a simple speaker upgrade. After watching AnubisZed video on his speaker upgrade I thought its worth trying it as my standard 6 speaker system was crap.
So after using his links to which speakers to get from Aliexpress I placed my order which also included a pair of tweeters which my car hadn't got. Speakers arrived yesterday so thought I get them swapped over today. Nice esay job and the sound difference is loads better for not alot of money.

Hi there,

Which tweeters did you buy? Did you need any kind of mounting to correctly locate it in the E89 tweeter housing - which is empty in my pronav basic 6 speaker setup - apart from some foam….

If you have the link it would be really handy. Thanks :D

The recess should be there to plop a standard BMW tweeter into..usually just clips in..a dab of hot glue for oversized or not seating properly ones should see too it

I didn't have the patience for waiting for China delivery when doing my minor updgrade - bought a set of the audiotech match coaxials for the front for £100 off amazon & a pair from the mini cooper for the rears (£10).

Ordered Thursday night - fitted on the Saturday. That's about it for my patience threshold.

Interestingly, the coaxials have a small filter that you use if driving from a stock head unit to attentuate the treble - tried it without & was quite .... zingy.

Louder for sure, clearer too. Can now hear what they are saying on radio 4.

Easy & cheap, good enough to no longer be shite - happy :)

Would you have the links to these please?

Can't see any on amazon right now - but the exact items I bought with part numbers are as follows (you will need to google for the best price etc):

MATCH UP X4BMW-FRT.3 Coaxial Speaker Upgrade for BMW E89 Z4 Roadster 2009-2016
2006-2013 Mini Cooper R55 R56 R57 left or right side door speaker 430407861941

Both are direct drop ins with the right wiring etc - nothing to modify. Very impressed with the cooper rears - they are miles better built than the BMW units. The material used for the speaker cone is several steps up in quality, and the magnet is probably 4x as large.

The match up kit is also excellent - highly recommended.

To be fair the BMW standard speakers are so rubbish, you could get a good sound quality upgrade by changing them for virtually anything else. You will know what I mean when you take a look at your own - they are nothing short of a joke in a £50k car. Hard to beleive BMW would think this was a good idea!

I changed the 4 mid range and both tweeters for the knock off bang-olufsen from Aliexpress and they are a big improvement over the stock speakers. I know, doesn't make sense but like Beardy Jon says, the build quality is excellent, a fraction of the cost of Bavsound.

Unless you picked it up recently, I presume the swap out you did was on the e86 in your profile and signature?

If so, can I ask....

- what setup do you have, and where were the mid-range speakers that you changed located? I have the basic 6 speaker setup, and trying to establish what I can swap as cleanly as possible. My assumption is those behind the seats and the empty slot in the doors, may be able to accommodate these speakers. Unclear whether the footwell can as well.
- were they plug and play/mounted directly? Any modifcation/splicing needed on the existing wiring? (I believe I'll need to do some wiring modifications if fitting speakers in the empty door slots).

I vaguely followed the speaker recommendations from the post here for a cost effective 676 speaker upgrade, it should be similar for 677. https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=125344 - Crunch coaxial in the back, Crunch 2 way in the doors, Hertz woofers in the lower kick panels. I bought 4 screw to 3 screw adapters for the Crunch speakers, and made a plywood plate for the woofers, with the correct terminal adapters are available on eBay. Relatively cheap and simple to install, and massive improvement. I think I wrapped the door tweeters in a Velcro strip to make them snug. Worked a treat!

As mentioned above, you could probably replace the standard Z4 speakers with a potato and improve the sound quality.

[edit] - the 4” door speakers need to be quite shallow. Not all speakers will fit, some will require modifying the speaker mount back, which gets into window not winding down properly territory.

I believe it is the 10 speaker business setup, I replaced both mid range door speakers and both the mid range behind the seats.
I did have to modify the wiring a bit from the stock connectors, the footwell woofers are 6" I believe.
