Speaker crackle

I have a bury thb car kit fitted in the Z, works great on all counts except one.

I run the music off the amp in the car kit bot my decision that of the installer. Which means that at loud volume bass notes in the rear speakers are crackley... I think it is the amp because on the radio the speakers seem fine.

I don't know anything about audio so any advice may help here. Is it possible that the crackling us coming from the underpowered amp??

Anyway long story short, in a previous car I had my parrot kit wired through the aux input so it used the head unit amp... Much better quality! I'm going to call a local engineer to have a look at doing this in the Z, (he did my previous car!)

So my questions are,

1. Does anyone have a similar experience,

2. am I right on the amp being the cause of the crackley speaker problem.

3. Would the speakers ever cut out completely if the amp was underpowered? (an additional if infrequent problem)

Any help most welcome

Thanks

Hello ...have a look at the problems ive encountered under ipod problems and speaker problems. Exactly as you have described, mine is the same. BMW will do nothing about it. Chief Executive and customer care don't give a dam. My company buy, i should re phrase, did purchase £500,000 worth of BMW's. We are going to Merc next year......

Issues with speakers/head unit
by spikey0001 - Sat Jul 10, 2010 12:54 pm

Hey- ive a December 2009 E89 2.3 - had dreadful issues with the speakers when using ipod and cd. Visited the dealer eight times who state there is a known problem but unable to fix. The first really annoying issue is if the music is played loud, the system will reduce the sound to apparently protect the speakers. Wost of all, if i use my ipod through the aux connector or play a cd, all speakers sound like your in a wind tunnel when the volume is turned up high....i tried my ex wifes and hers was fine. The dealer tried one, all ok, then applied a software update, and then the speakers were much akin to mine. They stated once the update is installed, it cannot be reversed. Id be really interested if anyone else has this issue and if any dealers were able to cure the distorted bass. Many thank

Update, :headbang:

Took it in for its inspection 1 and mentioned it to them, they took the car apart and tested the parts, apparently it is a problem with my hands free kit... as none of the BMW parts are faulty.

So i have 12 month warranty on that and the installation of the THB Bury kit (fitted by a chap recommended by Sytner High Wycombe) so i ring the guy, he sends a chap along. Again head unit out has a fiddle around with the wiring and as expected the speakers crackle and are intermittent. No problem thinks I he'll change the loom and away we go.

Half an hour later i pop out, he has the head unit plugged in as if it had come out of the factory (i.e. no hands free kit at all) with the fade put all into the rear. Unbelievable crackling, plus drivers side and passengers side cut out when tapped then cut back in when tapped again. (knackered thinks i)

So i ring BMW whilst the chap is there and he goes through what he has done etc and the test we have run with them on the phone. They seem OK if a little surprised and i am booked in on Wednesday for them to have another look. We left the hands free totally unplugged so it is currently as standard so we will see... he seemed to think it was the head unit, but i cant understand why the speakers would react to a tap on them if it was.

Either way bloody inconvenient when i have only had the car for 5 months!

Back to the dealer, had the speakers out, and they say they are fine, also the head unit is fine "must tbe the wiring" so booked in for them to basically take the whole interior apart to find the problem. They ahve been VERY helpful and havent quibbled in any way about the warranty. Snows in Portsmouth, so far very impressed. :)

they have been brilliant every time I used them, from purchasing, to warrantee work, to servicing. Glad to hear they are treating others well.

I have recently moved up to Basingstoke hospital, and was talking to a colleague who has a 1series, and they come and collect it from Basingstoke when she has it serviced!

They not only fixed the wiring problem (which is what it tuned out to be) giving me a loan car in the meantime but also fitted new speakers all under warranty as an extra! Great service great experience!
