Speaker change question?

Hi Folks,

I have a Z4 with the basic 4 speaker setup and business CD head unit.

I was wondering if anyone can tell me if the speakers or the head unit are the weak link in this basic setup?

Mainly I ask as I don't really have the money at the moment to do it properly so was wondering if its worth just changing the speakers, what would fit, be a worthwhile upgrade?

Thanks in advance

I have the same setup but with the Nav. I don't think the Nav head unit makes any difference. If you're not flush with cash, maybe save your money and get the best stuff when you can afford it rather than spending knowing you're going to replace what you fit.

There are a few people that have simply fitted the missing door speakers and been quite pleased, but if you're an audiophile then that might not do it for you.

Bavarian Soundwerks do packaged kits.

Ah, good point. But that kinda points to what I'm getting at.

Doesn't that package (and I have heard reasonably good things about it) suggest that the HU and amp are actually capable of a lot more than the stock speakers?

I'm wondering if I can get a modest but reasonable upgrade by simply finding 2 pairs of speakers that just drop straight in? It could be £100 well spent, perhaps?

If you go for speakers that you will add to, it won't be a bad investment. I've not done anything with mine as I've spend money fettling the body, the interior is next. To be honest, with the roof off and a lot of noise I didn't see the point in upgrading. I've added an Intravee and Alpine iPod kit and that's producing surprisingly good sound.

The bavarian soundwerks only replaces the tweeter and midrange in the door. The kickbass in the footwell is retained. Sound isn't all that bad with the stock audio though. It just needs much clearer highs. Bavarian soundwerks fixes that. You might want to consider adding an amp to the system. There are some plug and play solutions like Helix(audiotec fisher) where the small amp fits where the carver amp is next to the battery. Use the subwoofer loom to power original BMW subwoofers and you can't have much more stealthy OEM look than that.
But check your car, not all cars are prewired to accept midrange speakers. If it isn't you can tap it from the tweeter wire though, have seen people to this with succes. My 03 3.0iS was prewired though.

Basic stereo doesn't have the external amp, but adding a PNP type compact amp saves space and clutter while upgrading audio.

So, I can add door speakers with no amp and get more sound ? That's another thing on my list if so...

I've imposed a block on doing any new mods until at least one of the outstanding three (or four) mods have been done!
