My car a 2009 E89 has just passed 30K miles, what's the usual time to replace the plugs and would it be advisable to do the coil packs too at this mileage and age. I'v only owned it for a couple of months so don't know if they have been done at all before. Its had all the services over the years but as I say don't know if these have ever been done, not that I'v noticed any performance issues.
Another point, what tools do I need to remove the engine cover, it looks like its bolted down with 4 torx bolts. ?

Cheers.
Bri.

Coil packs aren't generally a routine service item on any modern car and failure is usually easy to detect (the last one I did was on a stuttery Ford confirmed with Torque pro) so I wouldn't waste money needlessly. My Z4's packs are 2003 originals and reports of failure seem fairly random so I don't know if failure is age, or mileage related?

Not sure what model you have but my 35i had it's plugs changed at it's 4 year service (13,800mls) so maybe they're age dependent?

If your car has been serviced by the book then they will have been done, maybe at 4 year intervals?

Hard to believe this is really an age related consumable? :?

30k seems a good mileage, i replaced car plugs at 30k when i first had car and then again at about 60k. Fine electrode had just about worn away and new plugs did seem to make a difference.

Job done, renewed them today just one issue the one nearest the bulkhead you cant get to because of the strut bar so I undid the strut bar bolt and it only needed to pull over by an inch and that gave direct access then into the plug. As you say (physiologically) better because now I know their done :)

The owner's Service and Warranty information booklet says replace spark plugs every 60K miles on the 6-cylinder 3.0 and every 45K on the 35i and is models. I just ordered 6 BMW plugs for my 35i with 95K miles @ almost $95 for the set. Expensive, but I like the idea of original BMW plugs. In Volvos it does make a difference with other brands and it's only every 45K miles.
