Just a quick question, when should spark plugs be changed on a e86 3.0i - read somewhere its 100,000 but that’s a while off as mine is on 62,000 with an annual mileage of 2-4k.

The garage checked them on the service and crossed checked the car’s paperwork and they were done 12 months ago. :D

Inspection of the condition and gaps of each plug required irrespective of mileage. Plugs these days will last at least 90k miles if the car is running correctly. It always advisable to make a visual check at least when an Inspection service is carried out. plugs should have a tan coloured by appearance if the cars fueling is correct. The type of plug dictates how you go about setting and checking their gap between the electrodes, single electrode plugs are measured with a feeler gauge multi electrode plugs like Bosch are better just cleaned as opposed to gapping each electrode but any signs of extreme wear on them you are best replacing, they do come pre gapped put of the box. Single electrode plugs are gapped by adjusting the outer electrode usually by tapping them against a hard surface so the feeler gauge has a sliding fit between the electrodes. Standard plugs are ok to use but higher quality plugs such as Platinum types do last longer but cost extra.
Plug gaps for your model can be found on owners manual or online and the type recommended by BMW by model.
