spare wheel

Hi all

Please excuse my ignorance and I guess this has been asked many times by New members but I am a new owner of a 2006 2,5 si and very nervous of taking out on drives without a spare

My car does not have run flats (thankfully as the feedback was very bad) so, question being what size spare wheel should I look for?
Previous writers suggest a 125/40r18

Is this the one to go for?
All suggestions are very welcome

Tony. J

You could buy a 17 space saver.
But some slime and a good pump would do.
For the last 7.5 years I've driven my company cars daily drivers over 250,000 miles no spare wheel and have not needed to use a spare wheel.

Hi Tony & welcome
If its solely to keep in the boot for emergency then you can source almost any 17inch BMW fitment wheel
ideally 7.5j or 8j & keep tyre size down to 205 40 17 for ease of handling & space in boot

If you go for a space saver the E46 17 in is the one to go for.Give Sopers Linclon a ring for a price, mention the forum for a discount, they don't charge postage.

get a motorcycle puncture repair kit from eBay it will deal with most punctures and usually comes with gas canisters to reinflate the trye and doesn't take up much room.

I am still selling my 16 " space saver which fits the back wheels on my 08. 3.0 si and can run with 18" but it does not fit the front as my car as the larger brake callipers so I now have a 17". If the 2.5 does not have the larger Brake Callliers then the 16" wheel will do .

This might be a silly question but.. if you do need to put a space saver on, will the original tyre and alloy fit in the boot considering the tyres are huge on the z4?!

Yep, will fit in the boot but will take up a fair bit of room.

So if your on a road trip with luggage and a passenger make sure you have a length of thin rope and something to protect the paintwork on the boot , cos that's where your gonna tie it or your passengers gonna have an uncomfortable journey

It depends, i will go to Le Man my own in June now the last thing i want is a blow out miles from anywhere and all the hassle it would entail plus a £150 tyre is fooked after the slime is injected. I now what your saying if its two up and luggage.

I cannot remember the last time I had a flat tire and needed to mount the spare - it was certainly many, many years ago. When I eventually replace the run-flats with conventional Michelin Sports, I plan to rely on an auto club membership and a cell phone in the rare event of a flat.

I did 3000 miles around Europe this summer with no spare just a can of gunk and a compressor. I did have very comprehensive euro breakdown cover but never needed it. Buy the gunk and a pump they'll fit next to your battery, and get good breakdown cover for the off chance the gunk/pump combo doesn't get you to a tyre shop.

Now stop being worried and start enjoying Z ownership!

You've obviously never been stranded on the side of an auto route with a 1km walk to a phone , I have and can only imagine the heartache if it happened at 2am in the morning and I didn't speak the language for the sake of a jack and a spare wheel , also remember that a lot of Europe is closed on Sundays .
Breakdown cover is insurance , you pay up front and claim it back when you get back to England , they do help out over the phone but your relying on them getting through to the recovery company and relaying the message and location .
I speak from experience

Sounds pretty terrible, but I was gone for 2 weeks and had the Mrs with me so no space for a spare wheel even if I wanted to take one

It was , stuck in in middle of France in vierzon for 3 days waiting for parts . I'm down to the dordogne at least 3 times a year then onwards to San Sebastián and up to the ring , I learnt from my mistakes so the first thing I did was buy a space saver and jack . Strangely enough I've only had one flat tyre in 12 years when in France , almost 40 euros to fix a punture
It was around 140 euro to get towed of the auto route then the hotel to pay for , the breakdown cover did save me £350 when I got back though .

Yes there is always a first time and the last thing you want is to be stranded in France with a flat.
