Spare wheel?

Did the 2009 come with a spare wheel? If so was it a space saver? Or did they just come with a can of repair spray?

I recently bought a spare space saver from another forum member, it takes up a little room in my E85 boot but feel happier having it with me.

Was just thinking that! The car is now not on run flats so space saver seems a good idea guessing there is a space for it!

In simple terms the answer is no..not if you want to use the E89 with the roof down..why would you buy it if you wanted a coupe ?

A breakdown / recovery card is your best / ultimate friend..

Yiu can try mystical chants such as gunk in the tyres before it goes down..gunk in the tyres after it’s gone down or rubber plugs and glue with a compressor if your lucky and it’s a simple puncture in the tread..

On my E89s in 50k+ miles the only puncture I had was a big bolt size hole in the tread..RAC was my friend that day..

Off all the punctures I’ve seen with Zeds in trips /runs none were repairable..

I’m with B21 on this one. For the cost it takes to cover you in any vehicle, its a no brainer to go RAC/AA etc. vs spare wheel (losing storage), foam (messy/touch-and-go) or run-flats (woeful everyday experience).

I'd agree with that too.

I assume putting a wheel in the boot stops you being able to open the roof in an E89.

Although I do have a full-size spare in the boot of my current E86. I just live with limited luggage space to hopefully avoid a long trip being ruined by a puncture!

How does the RAC sort you out if you don't have a spare, do they put you on a low loader?

They offer 3 options…buy their space saver spare..get a similar profile tyre fitted or recovery..I was really disappointed as I opted for recovery but thought it would take hours..so arranged to have Sunday lunch at the pub I limped too..they came with a low loader in less than 30 minutes..pisser..

I have a space saver in the boot. Never needed it in last 8 years of 11 years ownership since it was bought.
Bit like a parachute really, don't need it till you need it.

I have actually driven car several miles on the "rims" with no damage, with non rft tyres.

For people who carry a spare, if you have a staggered wheel setup does the spare fit both the front and the rear?
I was trying to think of one of our old cars that had a space saver and it could only be fitted on the rear.
If you punctured a front tyre you had to move a rear wheel to the front and put the spacesaver on the rear.
Now with a staggered fitment the rear couldn't really go on the front.

I don't think it is anything to do with the staggered fitment, but more likely because the space-saver wasn't big enough to clear the front brakes -which is why facelift E85/86 3.0Sis need a 17" space-saver if you want to fit it either end.

Yes exactly. The brakes were the problem.
But with a staggered wheel setup I would imagine that the spare must fit the front and the rear to avoid the situation I described.

Can you get the punctured wheel in the boot? I keep meaning to try it next time I have the jack out 🤣

I have compessor, gunk + rats tails in the boot the last few years after ditching the run flats, never need.

Never had a puncture (Touch wood) had a blow out once about 35 years ago, Had to wait about 4 hours for a breakdown vehicle.
Had left jack in the garage, DOH!

I am just expecting to use breakdown cover which i get bundled with my bank account anyway.

Before I bought mine I measured it with a ruler. Although King Charles wasn’t happy climbing into the boot.

Sorry I disagree I have a E89 and I have a spare wheel in the boot no problem with the hood down and still have space for a couple of hand grips enough for a long weekend for both the wife and I

I guess we have to agree to disagree …

I guess if we were really Spartan in our packing it may be possible..however SWMBO and I occupy the available volume in the boot (with the top down) and there is no way we could fit a space saver in there with luggage..since our forte is longer trips (several hundred miles in a weekend) I’m resigned to the recovery option..I do carry rat tails, gunk and compressor to ward of evil spirits but as I said ..in 7 years of Z4 meets off the 4 punctures I’ve seen non were repairable even on a temp basis..

Each to their own
