Spare Plastic Wallet Key

I've had my car for over a year now and I wondered what the purpose of this key is? According to page 16 of the handbook is it for emergency purposes only but they don't tell you what it can and can't do. This morning I tried it and found it unlocked the driver's door and then set the alarm off when I opened the door.:? It won't open the boot either. :o

Any ideas what it can do?

I think it's incase you lock you keys in the car, so you can get back in. It's plastic so shouldn't get left in the car itself because it won't work on the ignition. It should open the boot also?

So you can gain access to the vehicle for emergency purposes even if you loose the keys. Saves you smashing windows :D

Actually - it does work in the ignition.

When I bought my car - it only came with 1 key (plus the plastic spare). I forget the circumstances, but a while back I needed to use it. It opens the door and starts the car.

I didn't get that far since after I opened the door with the plastic key the alarm was set off! :? So when you start the car does the alarm go off?

I don't have one of these. is it a new thing. Would be perfect for when I go surfing.

on my 6 series it was the "valet" key , ,you could lock the glovebox & boot then hand the plastic key to the valet , ,he could move the car but not get into the locked areas .
i don't have one for my Z so can,t check if its the same
+ i would never need it anyhow , , ,no f3rkin stranger is parking my car ! they may not choose the right space :D

All new cars were supplied with two keys and this plastic jobbie (see page 16 of the handbook) but I'm unable to locate the official words of BMW what this key does. Described as the emergency key in the handbook.
