My stock seats are pretty crap, black cloth standard seats ( actually don't look bad ) but they have zero hold. Looking at options for buckets or aftermarket sports recliners and came across these http://www.sportseats4u.co.uk/sparco-r100-vinyl-sport-seat/prod_2601.html I actually really like them, not expensive..... BUT.... will they fit? whats the max width for a low seat in a Z4? hearing lots about the shoulder bolster catching on the doors on low fitted seats.

How tall are you/where do you have the stock seats set?
Also, Z4's are quite tight, so you'll need to pick carefully and generally a non-reclining seat will give you more space (I have a Corbeau recliner that I was going to fit in my old Z, but the recliner mechanism meant that it couldn't go back that far)
You'll also need base mounts, and the best bet for those is Macht Schnell's but they're not cheap.
All in you're looking at maybe £250-500 for a decent seat, £250 for the mounts, per side, so a total of ~£1,000-1,500 - and that'll only get you synthetic/cloth seats, if you want leather then you'll probably be looking at Recaro Pole Positions or similar at £800/seat.

According to the Sparco site, they are 500mm across the shoulders and 520mm at the base.
When I was looking at bucket seats the only options I found that I liked and would definitely fit were a max of 515mm across the shoulders.

The only thing I'm not quite sure about is the base, but I think you will be OK, given that the Pole Positions are 500mm across the base, and do fit (at the base at least). However, you will probably find it all a bit tight, so I'd definitely try before you by as it were.
Finally as others have said there is a lot to consider when changing seats: mounts (side or base), runners (so you can adjust back and forward), brackets (to actually attach to the car), how the seatbelt will attach (the buckle is attached to the seat base in the Z) and if you have an occupancy sensor to worry about. i'm 6'2 and have the seat the lowest and the farthest back. Maybe keep an eye on the sale section for some Z4 sport seats. Its a shame the stock seats are pants.

thanks for thatThe R100s should fit at shoulder level, but I really don't think many aftermarket recliner-style seats will fit at the base level, particularly as, like me, you're well over 6' and have the seat all the way back/down. The Z4 seats have all the mechanism under/up front whereas the aftermarkets are inline with the hinge itself.
S2000 seats were something I briefly looked at before, but I believe the chap in that link changed the seat bases over, which was more in depth than I anticipated.

I'm sure they can be made to fit, but they didn't really in my car (drivers side was OK, passenger side touched the door) and that was I said they didn't "quite" fit. As you say it'll depend a lot on the brackets you use, the height of the side mounts, the position of the seat belt tensioner and where exactly you need to position the seat.
I now have Tillett B5s and they fit easily, with loads of room to spare.
