Hi, My Z has 225/40/18 tyres , obviously the wheels are 18". I am considering spacers as I dont like the stance on it.
What are the widest ( maximum ) spacers I can use? Also which make are the best?.

Mines lowered and currently run a 10mm front spacer. A 15mm spacer rubbed but a non lowered car might be ok. A 12mm might be a happy place...
 
It depends what wheels you have on it.

Standard 108s or MV2s are staggered with 8J ET47 fronts and 8.5J ET50 rears, but if you have 225/40 x 18 tyres all round it sounds like you've got some non-OE wheels. So you'll need to check what ET they have - it's usually stamped on the back of the rim.
 
If you have standard wheels with wider rears e.g an offset of 47 front and 50 rear, you can easily go for 12-15mm front spacers and 20-25mm rear spacers.

I have 12 and 20mm spacers on mine. Sits well.

Sorry to hijack the thread a bit but, Ben can you tell me if that brings any negative handling issues?

I'm on staggered 18s and want to ideally do spacers but don't want my tramlining back!

I can't say for certain, but it seems to handle well, although the ride isn't the best. It's rather firm. I only use the car for the daily commute these days and it copes with that fine. I've never really had an issue with handling, more the vibrations caused by bumpy roads meaning I have to go slower than I'd like down a country lane.

I will have to check tomorrow, these are on my car I think they are reps (see pic).

Yes, they will be Reps - genuine CSLs are staggered 19s.

Took the wheel off and checked. It says ET 37......And 18 8 2JJ.
So what size spacers can I use on the rear and I assume the ET will be the same on the front, its got the same size tyres and look identical.

Well assuming all 4 are the same, a 10mm spacer on the front would give you the same stance as I've got on my car (mine are ET29) and with standard M-Sport suspension I've had no rubbing. (Photos below might help).

I've got ET40 rears which would sit 3mm further in than your ET37s, except they are 8.5J so being about 12mm wider with half of that inwards and half outwards they probably sit a few mm further out than yours. If you wanted them a bit further out maybe 5mm would be enough, or possibly 10mm.

Sorry I can't help with recommendations for brands of spacer as I've never used any.

I have 35mm offset and 18 mm spacers rear and 10 mm front in this picture.

Not all spacers are made equal. I bought fronts and rears from 2 different suppliers on eBay. They both looked the same but the 10 mm fronts gave the car a vibration around 90mph or 145km/h. I took the fronts off and the vibration disappeared. the vendor refunded the money and the 10mm went in the scrap heap.
Today I'm running 18 rear 0 front with 35ET. Drives nice - corners good

That looks great, but E85/86 wheel sizes have totally different offsets to those used on E89s.

That's why I don't think I need spacers running E89 wheels on my E86. Although a small one on the rear might work.
 
What is the off set on the wheels you have?
When I was shopping eBay I saw all sizes down to 2mm. That's not a spacer - it's a shim.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated. Still not too clued up on this, really bad at Maths. I used to think a square root was some kind of a fruit, :) What is the widest spacers I can go up to....I wont bother with 10mm they will make the bearest of difference I think. I had over 20mm on my Audi TT 2005. They really looked the biz.

EDIT......Just had a look at the wheels, (with a critical eye) they actually look ok!!! You know what.... I dont think I will bother with the spacers! Have a look, what do you think?

Well that photo of mine is the equivalent of your wheels with a 10mm spacer - I really don't think you'd want more than that for the sake of your wheel-arch liners!

If you wanted a bit more on the rear I think you can get 12mm ones, or even 15mm if you are feeling brave. :lol:
 
9.5 wide on the front with a 20mm spacer making it et15 and 10.5 on the back with no spacer at et 22. You can go a lot wider than most people think especially when not lowered . Have never noticed any downsides to fitting spacers .

They are rota slipstream I’ve had done in satin bronze with a diamond lip . Will be for sale after winter when I uncover the car .
