Southern Rail ...

You should all move to Holland!
Public transport is tip top here. Reliable, clean, always on time, very little industrial action, happy-friendly-helpful staff, can always get a seat at peak times and......free wifi :o
Lol

sorry - i was referring to gannet's point about cameras in my first few words.

Gatwick express is very much a corner case here, you 100% cannot apply that to effectively any other situation. Trains run from LGW to Victoria, and invariably only stop at two stations, if ever - clapham junction and east croydon. both heavily manned stations with largely straight platforms.

DOO would work if trains werent overcrowded and hugely oversubscribed at peak times, and there was no hurry to squeeze on. If you visit any of the top 5 Southern stations during peak hours (i commute from 3 of them), without a guard handling the doors the train would just never leave - people will always try and f**k with the doors when unchecked.

I'm all for DOO, but Southern hasn't invested in any of the required infrastructure to enable it. This does exist where DOO exists, like the tube, DLR and newer thameslink services with purpose built modern platforms+trains.

And did I not say at the start 'without seeing what the driver can see in the cab' ? Can you / Have you ??

It isn't Southern's place to invest in the infrastructure - that's network rail. To be fair to Southern/GTR they ARE investing heavily in new trains.

It isn't fair on the customers to keep striking as they are - I'm lucky that I've and understanding Boss, but even that is starting to wear a little thin - I'm going to have to start driving in, especially if the week long strike goes ahead in January. Who knows if that works out reasonably enough I may end up changing my commute to be by car which I sure is not what anybody wants me to do. If enough do that - there will be less money in the railways so that wont help...

Just read an interesting article on the sky news app there is far more to this than a union against an employer, well worth a read

It is not long ago that the slam door trains were finally phased out

They haven't been yet pvr. Still in use on some Virgin Trains East Coast, East Midlands Trains and Cross Country Trains.

I commute on trains most days. As usual with this sort of thing the truth of this issue probably lies somewhere in the middle of the argument.

However the Unions do nothing to help themselves. Their first resort is always a strike, it's always with about 15% of the membership voting, it's always picked to be on a date(s) to cause maximum distress to the long-suffering public in a futile attempt to put pressure on management and there's little sympathy out there for them because they are paid handsomely and rewarded wth a lot of holiday. I notice that nearly all of the staff I encounter on Virgin East Coast are always proudly wearing their RMT badge. It's a very politicised and militant union with a blatant disregard for its customers. I know the Southern Rail is an ASLEF rather than RMT dispute (or at least I think it is) and they are a little less militant because their members are better paid.

If we can do without a guard on a tube train surely we can on an overground service. No matter how crowded a platform might be it can't be as crowded as the underground is at 8.30am on weekdays. There's also curved platforms (Bank?). But I think there is some merit in the argument that more needs to be done to improve the infrastructure at stations to make them safer to introduce the driver-only trains.

The whole issue of how much the service costs is a different debate. Central European countries heavily subsidise public transport but it depends if you want a 'big state' high-tax economy or if you want a 'small state' low tax economy. We've been reducing government subsidy of the TOC's for years now and I think that's right. What isn't necessarily right is that it's so difficult to get extra carriages, more services etc. which could increase revenue and keep fare rises in check, because the existing track network is so antiquated and at capacity.

Actually it's both ASLEF and RMT - ASLEF have only just joined in and they represent the drivers. RMT have been striking for months and represent the conductors...

either way they have no regard for the daily lives of the customers.

This is the fault of the Government.

It is they who want driver only trains.
They are not penalising Southern because Southern are merely carrying out the Governments demands.

What the fcuk does the Government know about the practical aspects of operating a train?

As usual, the press talk bollocks.

The issue the unions have, understandably is driver only trains with 12 carriages and 1,500 or so passengers.

The Union does itself no favours though. Take out a one page ad/message in the Evening Standard or whatever and tell the Public exactly WTF the situation is, then the flak can all be diverted where it should be going at Grayling and the fcukin' Government. Getting fed up with their crocodile tears and lies.

Everybody likes to give the unions a good kicking, we'd have no sick pay, annual leave or pensions if it wasn't for them and the trains would be 10x more dangerous than present.
Rob

The Southern infrastructure is certainly better than the LUL safety wise as in curved platforms and overcrowding yet DOO works there......................
Political as already stated
According to the Sunday Times, Mr Hoyle said the union's "number one rule" should be to "strike to replace the capitalist system with a socialist order
". and to add fuel
Mr Hoyle also reportedly referred to a previous story which suggested the RMT and other unions were "co-ordinating to bring the government down", responding: "Shock horror. Guess what? We are."

Mr Hoyle is President of RMT

Yeah right, it"s 2016 and the bollocks they come up with is equivalent to 1810, in 1910 to 1966 the trains ran on time since then downhill fast with no brakes and no way back. The unions do not keep up with the times never have and never will. They need to adapt to the current standards of today and only then do they have a valid say in todays society. As regards your bollocks about pensions and sick pay, the unions just love to claim the glory for what exists today , study some more. Most of that was achieved by reformists, not unions. Look up Cadburys, and many other companies privately owned who made the reforms work. Even privately owned coal mines did more than the unions.
Biggest pile of crap this country had,,,,British Leyland, only survived that long because of Labour subsidy and block voting for the unions. nowadays the same dummies have to attend training college just to get in the assembly plants, the same training which the unions blocked for 20 years, rant over for the moment,,maybe
