Sounds of a rattle can?

Hi, 2005 z4 approx. 190k miles. Bought car 3 months ago used looking over the maintenance history. (all serviced by BMW indi). I don't see a mention of the Vanos or clutch work. However, I feel no slippage in the clutch. No noise or issues when shifting and car pulls really strong in all gears. No oil leaks or issues with burning oil or any exhaust smoke. As of late only after car is hot say after a 30 min run. On restart after say 30 min period of rest. The car sounds like marbles in a can at idle. Clutch in or out no difference in sound when having issue. However if I rev it a bit the issue goes away car runs strong and Idles like there was no issue. Has me perplexed as doesn't happen all the time? History shows oil changes every 3k. DISA was replaced but was after all this started. Car is not a daily used for pleasure if weather permitting. So a occasional weekend summer driver. Will be putting it up in winter. Would like some thoughts as don't want to replace part not needed if can help. Ie replace Vanos if it might be the clutch. Plan is to get Vanos done as after reading post it is way over due.

Hi,
VANOS rattle from the bearings has most commonly meen described as ”marbles in a can” and on youtube there’s good E46 videos of the noise. Should be fairly easy to point with a stethoscope too. The VANOS rattle repair is only and additional 30 minutes when doing the seals, if you have the parts.

If no stethoscope you could use a long screwdriver. Handle against your ear as you touch an engine part.

"This could result in serious injury, please do not try this at home" etc.

Hi, Thanks for all the reply's and suggestions and will attempt to nail down the trouble area. Tug don't think it would be the Timing chain tensioner as maintenance history shows replaced appx 40k ago. But anything is possible. Will provide updates as do more investigation.

it wasnt tug pootling by in his 2.0l stealth car was it ? he has some cheap speakers in it, might have been that you heard

Well, the OP wouldn't have heard you in your FIAT DOBLO  Oh, by the way, how did the remap and quad conversion go? and did you get 64 BHP out of it after the rather expensive remap? :poke:

here it is, the fiat doblo, it makes 150bhp, but when the engine is run in ( only done 1500 miles when we got a few weeks ago ) i might look at a remap to 180bhp , but not much point while all this covid is goin on eh, maybe next year, quad pipes you say.. have to think about that bit
btw, rita has asked if she can have our fish acidity tester back please.
