Sound System!

Ok so I've decided I really want to change the sound system in the z! Now I've got the business head unit with what look like 2 small 10" speakers behind the seats and 3 small speakers in the front! Now I'm looking for ideally links to direct replacement if possible! As I've not really been able to find much info on what people have swapped there's for! No I'm looking to keep the original head unit!

Interested in this too. Just speakers though, I can't be bothered faffing with amps. My first thought was to just fill in the blanks in the doors...

Tapatalking...

I did a bit of research on this when I joined the forum. My conclusion was that - unless you're prepared to spend a fair wedge of cash, the 10 speaker system is difficult to improve on.

Would be interesting to see what can be done. I have concluded that a new amp, new speakers etc is needed, which is a lot of faffing about, for a relatively modest gain. I think to see real improvements the OEM head unit would have to go too.

In my view you need a head unit that delivers flat EQ response, and an AMP that will do the same. Then you need speakers to do the same.

IMO BMW have done a fairly good job with the 10 speaker system.

Will watch this one for any interesting updates. I hope someone has a quick win answer, that doesn't cost the earth

How do you mean ruined? Curious.

Mine sound distorted when standing with the boot open, but sound crisp when I'm in the car. I have OCD about clear sound, and have a studio set up for my decks at home.

Can you hear you speakers distort in the car?

as in they are broken lol, the back 2 buzz and sqeak even when the volume isnt too high! front ones seem fine

someone must know something lol, someone must have changed there business system before!

I changed the speakers in the footwells, tweeters, then a set in the doors ( I had the crap basic 6 speaker system), I then fitted a dirty great amp in the boot.It sounds really nice and clear with detail I'd never heard in spngs before,BUT, it really needs a sub. That's my next mod.So far I've bought good kit ( focal speakers) and spent close to 4 figures with fitting,so it's not cheap. When I've done the sub, I'll let you know how it all sounds. Like others have posted, anything other than a speaker upgrade WILL get expensive.

If its just the rear speakers, why not try a local specialist to get a quality pair of small subs to replace the knackered ones? It shouldnt cost too much.

Just a thought...

rear speakers will still get the full range signal so would need to be filtered somehow, if you replaced them with subs you would need to amp them anyway as the headunit doesn't have enough power to drive them.

Just fade all the way to the front and upgrade with either 2 or 3-ways. (optional) Small amp with line level inputs up against the firewall and robert is indeed your mothers brother.

OP, from what you have said I think you only have the basic 6 speaker setup, one behind each seat (you have storage cubby holes) and 2 each side at the front, 2 are just grills.

This system easy easier to upgrade and there are a few write ups on here.

it's a while since i've dabbled with car / home speaker systems but would a basic resistor / coil not serve as a low pass filter in this set up? there's a formula that calculates the ohmage or whatever it's called and you can buy them for pence off of e bay just wire it in line with the speaker cable.

as others have said you would have to spend a fortune on improving the OEM set up, as it's not actually that bad.

often people just go for loud, and that's not a great idea, especially in a small car...

i would think if you were going to do something, a set of components up front and one small sealed sub in the back would be adequate - i have a set of smallish monitors with floor standers at the other end of the room hooked up to my decks and they sound brilliant, powered by adequate wattage..

Agree, that's all you need in a smallish car: quality components (with separate tweeter) mounted in front of the listeners, and a small, sealed sub. Preferably amp the lot with an adequate 4-channel amp and you're laughing.

My best sound system is currently in my van . Upgraded headunit, standard front speakers (due for replacement) but with a small-capacity sealed sub: http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?products_id=106 (only needs a very small volume sub box) powered by a very nice JBL amp. IMO you NEED a sub to get best SQ. I've not tinkered with the Z4 system (I have the basic 6-speaker system) as it's good enough for the amount I listen to it, but if I was I'd replace the storage compartments behind the seats with the sub enclosure lines and fit some sort of 6.5" subs in their place.

Please let us know how you get on with your quest, Nova2k7.

After installing the DICE MediaBridge, I'm now noticing that the basic Business sound system is a bit lacking. The bass rolloff is so great, it's to the point where I'm actually missing basslines from tracks :(

As srhutch mentioned, there are forumites who have upgraded their sound system themselves. One of the best threads I've seen is: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=24956&p=348349

yeah, thats right, i often see it for tweeters but not seen it in subs. when you amp them the chances are the amp will have an adjustable low pass filter anyway.

I'm currently fitting a 2 way setup into mine with an amp, i've got as far as fitting the tweeters and rest has been in bits for 4 months ! :headbang:

Just quickly looked st the link above and don't really want to be spending that much! Currently trying to save for a house lOl

How much do you want to spend; I've completely ripped out my sounds and replaced them; I've also posted up several options for replacement too. somewhere... search for '06 Coupe ICE install on the forum for info on what you're looking for

I would be looking to upgrade mine also.

I have the basic 6 speaker system.
The grills in the doors which don't have speakers behind the, in the basic stereo option, is there wiring in place to plug and play new speakers? Or is more wiring needed?
