Just thinking and probably a stupid question....... but why is the sound generator so called; given that you have to take it apart to get anything like decent sound out of it?
 
because it does generate sound?
If you take it out and block off the hole, it's actually quieter (even with all the foam in)
 
Remember the z4 is a luxury sports car, the majority of z4 owners dont want stupidly loud cabin noise. Its not a Lotus Elise etc.

So if people do want a bit more of an induction roar they take bit of the noise dampening foam out. Personal preference then. When selling a car BMW have to take the whole market into consideration.
