there was a thread on this but i cant find it, can anyone point me in the direction of where thisi is located in the car and how to rmove the foam, i would like to try it, 3.0si thanks

How hard did you look, this took less than 30 second to find

must try harder :poke:

Once you find it its a 30 second job to remove close the bonnet and your away then you drive around for a few days realise you feel like you are driving something like this

and pop it back in :D

To be honest even at my age i do take it out now and then (the sound generator that is ) :D its fun on an A road but in an Auto on a long run its to loud especially on a motorway and sounds cheap.

i did look up sound generator but could not find specific location, perhaps i didnt look hard enough, havent had time to do it yet but appreciate the help.

I didn't even last a few days, I put it back in after 10 miles.

Am i missing something here? I dont understand all the negative response to the sound generator mod. Are all you guys that think its too loud removing all the foam? because if you are of course its too loud!!
If you just remove half of it, then it is only loud when you thrash it. It certainly doesnt sound cheap, and i cant possibly see how it can be too loud on the motorway.

I done the sound generator mod on Sunday, removed the foam closest to the cabin and thought when driving normally no change but when you thrash it it became really really loud, too loud i thought .... i prefer the old noise tbh!

I took the foam out nearest the cabin ages ago and its still out, braaaaaaaaap etc..

propper love it me like :driving:

Mine never had two pieces of foam just one which i cut in two and tried putting half back in but made no difference.

Auto cars can drone on the motorway on very long drives so this mod makes it worse especially at the higher speeds you can drive abroad

I was just wondering what the actual purpuse of the foam pices is... It seems that the SG is connected to the air intake behind the air filter. Yet it draws air from the outside somewhere behind the engine fire wall. I suspect the air there is unfiltered. Is there any danger of removing the foam parts and not filtering the incoming air? I haven't looked at the exact specs but from trying it on my z4 it came to mind.

No danger whatsoever.

X2

I love when you hear the sound of a rasping / purr....ing engine coming towards you like a DB9 or the likes (not some boy racer exhaust)

I find it strange that a 3.0l sports car (Z4) does not sound any different than a standard VW golf when it drives past you... others will probably disagree to that but i wish there was more of a suttle purring sound comming from the engine (apart from the sound generator which is only heard inside the cabin)

You do have to tinker with the amount of foam to get it right.

Personally I think the car sounded crap standard, a total let down for a straight six motor in a BMW sports car!

Thank god they put a sound generator in!

Dave

Im hopefully going to get one from the scrappy this weekend, there breaking a nice 53 3.0i so im gna offer him £15-20 for it

then il play with the foam.... oh after i put my pipercross IK in :P

Ah the joy of forums, I had no idea there was a sound generator under the hood. I have always liked the sound of the 3.0l, but this has give me a nice quick Sunday morning project, based on the comments on this thread and SK's how to (very good btw), I will prob go for the one foam option.

Hopefully the smile on my face will remain when Arsenal beat Chelsea

I've tried independently taking the larger piece out and then the smaller piece. Removing the larger piece made it far to noisy. Removing just the smaller piece was just right

Following what many others have done on here, I removed the foam closest to the cabin. A definite improvement in noise in the higher revs but maintains the same hum at lower revs. So this did put a smile on my face :D

Sadly later in the afternoon that was ruined by the Arsenal Chelsea result
