now that i have one im wondering .. the sound generator is the induction air being sucked in - yes ? so why isnt there a loss of power as the air is invited into the bulkhead instead of it all going into the manifold ?

It isn't the intake air. There's a diaphragm inside that the intake air vibrates, causing the air inside the pipe to the cabin to take on the same acoustic properties.

I was surprised to find bmw had removed the trumpety device from the 3.0 e89, this suits its refined stature imho
