I hope you aren't too cut up about President Obama wanting to tighten up the gun laws all you republicans are such a big fan of!

In the end it won't effect me either way. I don't own assault weapons (don't have a use for them), my military issue 1911 only holds 7 rounds in the clip, and I live in one of the most gun friendly states in the country. Its a bypass pipe - about an inch diameter that basically goes around the rear backbox - there are loads of how to and why to links on here.
The reviews i read seem to suggest that up to 5k rpm - its pretty standard and then opens up a bit beyond that - so motorway driving should be ok.
I'm a bit worried that a complete backbox removal would be a bit too loud - not sure how I would get on at a track day too - they have a limit on noise up to 5k rpm.
in fact - then i get into a headspin of trying to understand how the benefits of an engine that may breath better might perform better or worse than any torque changes that changing the back box might create.
And then i remember that im a fairly conservative middle age bloke and generally dont have a clue what im doing - so the sound generator and the exhaust bypass is probably as far as i need

Well back-pressure is never a good thing. That myth has hung around since the garden. What matters is velocity, which is a result of pipe size.
Too big of a pipe = low velocity = no scavenging
But by the time exhaust reaches the general exhaust system (post collector on a header), there is little to zero scavenging to be had anyways. The ideal exhaust would end about 12"-18" after the collector and dump to the atmosphere (generally speaking), as anything more just adds back pressure.
I completely removed the backbox (left everything) when I first got my 2.5 and it was horrible (why I was asking where you were going with this). It droned horribly and hurt my head (and I have driven cars with open headers dumping under the floorboard). So I was going to advise against it (but IF you were gutting it, might as well).

Just asking the question, but I assume the exhaust system is designed around the PVT constant (Boyles Law) for optimum balance of noise and performance...

Taxes are a harsh reality of the real world, the situation in American dictates that taxes go up, if the idiot that run the country before Obama hadn't done such a bad job perhaps things could be slightly different. Plus, the main group Obama wants to target in his tax plan is the wealthy, which is just right, why should they pay marginal tax on such high earnings when the country most of them claim to love is in dire straights? If you can save money in the present climate then you are either earning very comfortably (as I suspected in the first place) or you and your family live a life of absolutely no unnecessary expenditure.v8z4 said:

From someone who has laid the whole exhaust system on his stomach, under the car (car on jack stands), I can definitely say it could stand to loose a few lbs (kg for all you people with a sensible measuring system
). That factory exhaust system is H E A V Y HEAVY! :lol: (again, noise will go up)
Phil, look through this thread. The original pics are gone, but later on towards the end there is a link to a how-to, to install it in your engine, plus I took some pics recently of mine. The engine / bits look different, but the principle is the same to remove it I believe.
