Sound Generator Question

Before I go and buy one, is anybody selling or thinking about selling a sound generator for install on the M54?

I've read up and it sounds like a great mod. The car is too quiet for my liking. Hopefully it will make a good deal of difference.

Should I not find one on here, is the best (or only) place to buy the parts via a dealer?

Never done much hands-on stuff with cars, but quite fancy this one as a cherry-popper!

cheers guys

Here the link to the various BMW parts for the sound generator:

Unless you can get one secondhand or from a breakers the best and only real option is to buy from a dealers. Sopers of Linclon (do a quick search) seem to offer the best prices.

13-74-7-514-863 SOUND GENERATOR 1 £61.00
13-71-9-071-752 KIT 1 £1.26
13-74-7-518-282 BRACKET 1 £1.55
11-61-1-705-032 (supersedes 11-61-5-533-331) OVAL HEAD SCREW 1 £0.49
07-12-9-952-121 CLAMP 1 (not needed provided with item 1)
13-74-7-514-864 SOUND PIPE 1 £21.10
13-71-7-514-865 GROMMET 1 £2.95
13-54-7-514-867 RUBBER BOOT 1 £21.81

this is the full list of items required for the M54 2.5 engine, and price I was quoted.
Note the diagram in the previous post does not show the last item because the diagram assumes standard fitment to 3.0 engine (which has the last item)
The last item is the 80mm rubber elbow with the take-off point for the SG and replaces the elbow on the 2.5 engine which does not have this take-off. Important.. you cant do it without this part.
I fitted this mod to mine and removed the foam nearest the bulkhead,, Sounds like it has an induction kit now from inside the cockpit :driving:  .

instructions too :D

I have the 2.2i as well. Would really like to add this mod, so I'd also like to know if it fits my car. Cheers.

Just remember, it only makes it louder *in the car* it doesn't increase the noise outside the car as an aftermarket cat-back exhaust would.

I haven't taken any of the foam out of mine yet-nice amount of sound in there as is.

I added the foam back in. I have to agree with some on here that the SG mod cheapens the feel of the car as it starts to sound like an underpowered modified jap engine.

I did like it for a bit with the foam out but then the novelty wears off. It was actually very nice to put it through the rev range with all the foam back in. Sounds so smooth :)

I removed the foam only at 6 on the linked diagram at the top of this thread and I love it. Just adds a slightly more throaty growl around 4.5-5k rpm but doesn't interfere with cabin noise levels when I don't want it to.

As I had one on my 3.0l this mod was free :D I'd do it even if it wasn't though.

Hey guys,

I got my sound generator off a 3.0i from a breaker for £10 including the gromet and different air intake pipe, it took 5 mins to fit and with the smaller bit of foam out it sounds just right IMO.
