Sound Generator Modification

TommyGG, only the 3.0i and 3.0si engines had sound generators...

It can be retrofitted to 2.5i if you can source the parts :thumbsup:
 
Would a CAI eliminate this and what about just capping off the holes on the bulkhead?

Edit, I removed the plug/wad of foam closest to the bulkhead. It required no tools and took under two minutes. Driving around it is hardly noticeable until you mash the pedal, then you are keenly aware of the extra noise. My gf loves it, big smile on her face the whole ride home today.
 
Thanks for this! Just removed the foam closest to cabin, took less than 2 minutes with no tools and HOLY HE'LL! Sounds great and love how its still quiet until you're 'enthusiastic'! :driving:
 
I've just done this on my car.

I removed the round foam block (about 3 inches long) at the firewall end of the pipe. And it's really loud now.

I didnt take the pipe off altogether, so have no idea if the other bit of foam is still in the other end (as a previous owner may have taken it out).

But any louder and it would be too loud, so I won't be looking to remove the other bit if its in there.

Cheers for the tip, had no idea and it only took 2 minutes to do.

Just done mine - really is stupidly quick and easy. I probably spent more time unlocking the car and opening the bonnet than doing this mod! Not heard it yet, but from what everyone says I'm pretty damn sure I'll like it...

Far to loud for me completely removed, I cut the bulkhead foam in half.... Now perfect for me :)
 
I thought it was a nice deep roaring sound over 4000 revs... But everyday pootling around is no difference.. I'll be leaving it out :)

Just removed 2 of the foam pieces, and been driving the z4 for about 3 days. I have to admit, the sound is rather embarrasing for a bmw inline 6... there is no "deep roaring sound" beyond 3-4 revs whatsoever. The sound is harsh-metallic. Why would anyone want this sound? Annoying.

I think most people find it best with just 1 taken out? That's what I've done and it's just right for me. Almost no change with low engine loads, but a good injection of induction noise when you put your foot down (and without being anti-socially loud on the outside).

I've heard other people say they didn't like both pieces taken out and some who love it, but the best part about this is how easy it is to put back if you don't like it.
 
I've been playing around with this for a while now, and here's my opinion. For driving around town or a B road blast, low-ish revs and many gear changes, removing both pieces of foam sounds the best. This is almost unbearable at normal motorway speeds (70mph), where removing only the bulkhead foam works out to be the best option. Anything over about 115-120mph, however, and it's best to have both pieces fitted, or wear ear-plugs. It depends what sort of sound you're after, and that will be affected by how and where you drive your car the most. Take from this what you will, but I've just had to refit BOTH pieces of foam... :driving:
 
Hey, regardless of opinion I think the best part like big_al said, is how easy it is to do this...

I'm new to BMW's in general, and just having fun with my z4... great forum here!
 
Just done this on ours, took the dark grey foam from the airbox end of the tube out first but didn't notice much difference, so have popped that back in and removed the denser white foam bung from the cabin end and we'll see what it sounds like come the morning.
I did find popping the round ring off the cabin end of the pipe first and putting that back into the firewall on its own made it a lot easier to make sure it was sealing properly against it, then just gave the pipe a sturdy shove back into place. :D

I am new to BMW's and have just bought a 2.0 2008 Z4 and was wondering if there was a solution such as this to increasing the sound of my engine?

I've done sound generator retrofit to 2.2. It's same as in 2.5.

Has anyone tested using sound generator without connecting it to firewall? Then all sounds from sg would come out next to engine
 
Hey guys,

I removed the sponge that is closest to the firewall...
Now i was wondering what you did regarding the big sponge that is on the other side?




I can't seem to separate these 2 pieces as it seems it would break, and i can't fetch the sponge out of this
 
leave that sponge in.. it works to stop any unwanted crud getting into the intake!
Removing either one or both of the other two is all you need :)
