Sound Generator mod on 2.5 - is it worth it?

Hi All,

I just wanted to ask if any of you think its worth fitting the sound generator off the 3.0 to the 2.5. I keep toying with the idea but unsure whether I would actually notice the difference. I know some of you with them have removed foam to make a deep and loud note to the sound in the cabin but if I was to fit a stock sound generator to my 2.5 would I notice any difference? I currently like how Z is quiet around town and on the motor way but just feel it lacks a bit sound wise when you decide to give it some...

To be honest I was going to just get one but the main dealer in Norwich wants £101 plus VAT, and to be hnest if it isn't going to make any noticable difference then I can think of better things to spend £100 on. Is the main dealer the only place you can get one from in the UK?

Many Thanks in advance
John

Given that the 2.5 is still a 6-cylinder engine, I don't see any reason not to fit a sound generator. I'm less sure about the 4-cylinder engines because they just don't produce the same sound.

Didn't realise they were as expensive as that though :o - but if you do decide to get one, take about 2/3 to 3/4 of the foam out for best results.

You might get lucky in the classifieds on here - perhaps put up a "wanted" post, you never know.

i woudl agree with a11y, why not fit it, it will give you the same noise as the larger engine 3.0 i am assuming. Mine sounds great with just one piec of foam taken out. Not too loud, until you floor it

Believe me you WILL noticce the difference. I have a 2.5 with the SG and all foam taken out.

I dunno. I messed around with the sound generator in my 3.0 and it just pissed me off. With all the foam out the engine resonates around the cabin with such a racket that flooring it was painful and some bits of trim vibrated nearly all the time. With the foam in the bulkhead end only there is no discernible change. With the foam at the engine end the car 'honks' after 4k and only starts to sound nice at 6k+.

Pain in the arse if you ask me and not worth £100.

I am back to being double foamed up my noisy pipe and it is back to being nice and refined but with consistent building growl through the revs.

Of course a 2.5 may be different.

£100 ain't that bad for a new one!

Is there the hole in the 2.5 bulkhead to fire the noise in through?

Dave

When anyone comes with me they are impressed with the extra engine noise i love it with most of the foam out  Well worth it

You are better of inveting in something that really does improve performance - strut brace perhaps - rather than something that just makes a noise.

Hmmm good point. I saw this article http://www.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63037 which tells you how to mod the 2.5 to take the sound generator. However now you mention it I don't seem to have the hole for the bulkhead like the guide shows. Unfortunately the guide doesn't show the hole before fitting only after the sound generator is installed. Which seems odd, I do have a round cap but there is a cable running verticle to it that is connected to stop it moving about. My car is a 2003 model - not sure if that makes any difference.

Thanks
John

Yes it does - its 100% plug and play.
