Sound Generator Foams (What size are they?)

Ok, when I bought my 05 3.0 18 months ago the previous owner did tell me he had removed one of the sound generator foams but had misplaced it. I quickly discovered that both foams were in fact missing from the pipe. I did discover the foam in the pictures tucked away near by battery and am convinced it must be one of the sound generator foams. it roughly measures 40mm/1 1/2 inches in diameter and 30mm 1 1/4 inches in length. What I need to know is what size/length should the two foams be for a prefacelift M54 3.0? Is the foam in my pics definitely one of them and hasn't been cut down? I have also seen conflicting info regarding which one goes at the bulkhead end and which one goes to the engine side.

Can some one help to clear this up as curiosity has got the better of me and I want to make up some foams out of an car wash sponge and experiment with different noise levels. I'm even thinking of removing it entirely and putting a 2.5 elbow on there just to see what that's like. Must be getting old!

Can't confirm exact size but know when I played around with them on my old 3.0si they were deffo bigger than that. That's almost certainly been 'chopped' for experimentation I'd say.

Thanks for the info however with yours having the N52 engine I think they are a different size. I know the Sound Generator on the post facelift cars is a different design to the early ones like mine. There's conflicting info on here regarding the SG and I think the different ones fitted depending on the engine type are at the heart of the problem.

Quite possibly. Id don't have the info for your engine but sure someone will be along to confirm

Surely there must be someone out there who recalls what size the foams on a prefacelift 3.0 (M54) are? :D

thats cut down for sure, i reckon its at about one third, i can measure my removed one up when i get home but i estimate its probably about 75mm

Let me check i think i have both bits. You can have them if i do.

Just looked I have the larger one. Its yours if you want it.

MM you have a PM

thanks

The sound gen foams were two sizes. The piece you have is the smallest of the two pieces. It is definitely the sound gen foam insert.
Place this piece near the sound gen outlet at the bulk head firewall for a quieter sound. Tbh once the car revs above 4000 the sound increases exponentially thereafter. If you drive your car with gusto and spend a lot of time in the 4000 upward rev range then it's going to be loud...You may want to stick both pieces in. Someone's offered to give you the other piece. If you're not driving in the upper rev range too much then the smaller piece may serve you better. Again, this is personal taste so experiment to find what suits.

Had both pieces of foam out for a while. Found it too loud but realised i'd lost both pieces. Fashioned one from an old piece of packing foam big enough to be held by suspension in the pipe close to firewall.
Not too loud but still louder than stock.

Would suggest filling the pipe with foam pieces big enough to sit fast in the pipe and until u cant hear anything discernible then take out piece by piece until ur happy if ur going to go all anal about soundlevels, lol.

Thanks guys for the advice and confirming I already have an uncut smaller piece. I hoping to get the "missing piece" from MM, just dont seen to be getting his PM for some reason at the moment.
