Sound generator /exhaust mod

2 things please chaps firstly would my 53 regestered 2.5 have the sound generator and I keep hearing about this rear silencer mod where you either put straight through pipes on now do you open the silencer up and do the mod inside the box or just take it off all together and replace with straight pipes

The sound generator wasn't fitted to the 2.2 or 2.5 and can be retrofitted but is only piping engine noise in to the cabin,

the exhaust mod is probably a better bet for the money, I'm sure someone with experience will be along shortly :)

cut the back box off, replace with 2 straight through pipes, wont be too loud, and will breath a little better
wont add and performance, just a crisper note

I am on my second Z4C now!

The first had some foam out of the sound generator, but the current one seems to have a standard sound generator but has a non-original stainless centre and tail section exhaust.

It might be personal preference, but I like the extra exhaust burble from the rear more than the piped induction noise.

So I would go for more exhaust sound rather than a retro-fit sound generator.

Yeah I would prefer the exhaust noise over anything to be honest wasn't sure if ithis would be too loud if I take the back box off completely and replace with two straight pipes

I have tried taking off the backbox and replacing with straight pipes, far too loud in my opinion and the drone is unbelievable. Instead it did the "bypass pipes mod". I have run 2 30mm pipes running from just before the backbox to the tail pipes, running over the top of the back box. It does contact the heat shield which isn't ideal but it sounds fantastic and no drone at all. Could be worth considering?

Have you got any photos of how you've done this ?

Unfortunately no pictures of my own but below is one that I gave to a local exhaust shop to copy, but I have the 3.0 so there are 2x inlets, 2x tail pipes and therefore 2 pipes running over the top.

Wow that's a bit different,

How does it get on at mot time ? And you say it gives a good exhaust note with no drone ?

Many thanks Stuart

To be honest I haven't had an MOT since it's been fitted but as they run over the top, you would never know it's been done unless you removed the backbox, therefore shouldn't be any problems!

In terms of sound, driving normally sounds pretty much as stock if not a little louder (especially cold starts), above 3000rpm it really sounds great and then on the overrun you get some pops and crackles, really notice them with the roof down. Overall, definitely something worth doing. No drone at all, so it's the best of both worlds and only cost me £80. I'll try and get a video soon.

Can anyone tell me how loud these cars are with the rear box removed and straight pipes put on really fancy doing this but don't want ti go for it if it's ridiculously loud

Ive put some washers between the main pipes and the backbox, basically a tunable backbox delete, only issue is on a cold morning you can see some exhaust creep through the rear left alloy.

Any vids? Definitely interested in doing this.. would love me some pops and crackles in the exhaust.

Just some pics of my mod showing box internals for you. Mine was quad conversion so not same as you're after but shows you what's inside. Not as much there as I thought 20151013_194348.jpg
