Sort of whining noise...

Hi there,

I'd like to ask you guys from some advice/help... when at very low speeds - parking pulling away from lights I can hear a slight whining sort of noise. I can hear it if I press slightly on the accelerator or if I engage the clutch. It then disappears when I pick up speed.

Also, When pulling away after braking or having the handbrake on, I get a slight squeal from the rear wheels - not tyre squeal ;) - I believe this is due to new rear discs and pads. Now long should it take for them to bed in? We've had them on there for about 300 miles now.

Any help or advice would be great!
Cheers,
Mo

Hard to tell from your description. Is it only happening in first gear?

As to the brakes, does it sound like the squeal you sometimes get on braking? I've never done the brakes on mine, but some cars have anti squeal shims, might be worth checking everything is fitting properly.

Yea only happening in first gear mate. Not all the way through the revs though - just as you touch it; then it goes. Also happens if you bring the clutch up, you hear it as it bites.

Yeah I might have a look at that. Saying that though, I've taken the car to a garage for a 'health check' and they told me they just need to bed in. Silly me didn't ask how long that would take though :(

Just went out there to have a go...

1 - pressing on the clutch, no noise!
2 - pressing on the gas, no noise!
3 - pulling away in 2nd, no noise!
4 - no squealing from breaks.

All I can hear is the sort of suction noise from the engine, am I right in saying that this is the engine sucking in the air?

Maybe the noise was because we has just been on a bit of a roadtrip, about 200 miles. Could that have had some sort of reason for the noise last night?

Cheers for the help mate

I think I heard this from my engine last weekend. it was more of a rusty metal kind if squeal than a high pitch disc brake squeal. it went after the car had warmed up a bit.

Well, 3.0 litres is a big set of lungs, and you can expect to hear some intake noise. Do you have an intake kit or standard? I wouldn't describe that as a squeal though...

TBH, if the dealer isn't trying to take money off you (and they don't normally miss a trick), you've got the right oil levels etc, I'd not worry too much unless it gets noisier. IIRC the car is new to you so you might just be getting used to your cars particular noises etc. Once you get tuned into them you will notice anything unusual fairly quickly

As to dmo's rusty metal squeak, I often get that if the car's been standing and the disks have got light surface corrosion.

Well just went out to the shops there and the noise from the engine is back it does it when its in 2nd too. At very low revs though. Not sure if maybe its doing it all the time and I just can't hear it because of engine noise?! With the bonnet up I can hear the noise coming from the front centre area of the bay, around the belts. Hmm :s

If it's a squeal at low revs, it could be a belt tensioner needs adjusting. Mine occasionally does this if it's been raining a lot. It's only done it two or three times in the year I've owned it though so not been too concerned about getting it sorted. It'll wait until the service when I'd expect that sort of thing to be checked anyway.

Worst case it could be a pump bearing, alternator bearing etc. Don't panic though, most likely a belt may need adjusting.

Ah ok! That's put my mind at rest for now. We did have a massive down pour the other day actually! I'll be phoning the garage tomorrow to book it in under the 3 month warranty. Hopefully its nothing too worry about! Thanks guys

Turns out it was the fan belt tensioner and the handbrake shoes causing the two noises. Getting both sorted under warranty! Thanks for your help mate!
