got to work today and as i turned the car off it issued a loud beep and the oil light came on as yellow.

im a bit worried now if i can drive it without putting some in striaght away

ive read through all the threads about which oil etc and there seems to be no consistent answer so

what should i put in? if its 5w30 then i have loads at home wich is <5miles

if its not i want to get some but i will need to drive it will i be ok?

im annoyed as im aware that there is talk of the 3.0l using oil and i did check mine for the first month or so and it seemed to be ok.

its a bit difficult on my drive tho as its on a slope. what volume is it between the orange light and being "full"

That happened to me last night as well.

I had a bit of oil left in a 1 litre bottle in the garage which I used, but I didn't really note how much I put in. Probably 300-400ml I would say to get it to full on the dipstick. When the light went on it was on the minimum mark on the dipstick.

Any particular oils which are recommended as I now have no spare oil left. I used 5W30 Castrol Fully Synthetic somethingorother.

Don't stress about the light coming on. Still plenty oil to keep the engine running sweet.

Usually the beep means c.0.5l of oil required.

I've seen my car do around 8k without needing a top up, but that was mostly "miss daisy" driving

I was about right then.

I read a lot of engine braking can cause loss of oil though valve stem seals. As my car is a weekend fun car, I do use the gearbox a lot on spirited driving.

IIRC it's 1 litre it's expecting when it gets to the light/beep stage.

cool thanks

ive got castrol 5w30 at home so ill put a little bit in and then bring it to work tm where i can get the car level in the car park.

that damn beep! it scared me shitless yesterday when i was on the m1 and it thought i should know it was 3.0C outside :)

I find it varies in practice. I've had a beep when the oil has been 1/3 way up on the dipstick. Best to check each time I suppose

Mine took nowhere near 1L to get up to full again.

I know! I hate not having the dipstip, because at least when your topping up you can keep checking the level on the dipstip as your putting in until it reaches the maximum level, but when it's electronic you always have to put in less so you wont overfill.

It's bloody loud that beep :) lol and I was enjoying a bit of peace after being on a plane for 3 hrs and then getting through that s**t hole Luton airport :)

Anyway go figure get in the car tonight and there is no light or warning beep at all.... Must be just on the limit

isn't there a sensor in the pan that can get dirty and cause the light to come on?

My car's yellow light comes on after the car warms up and goes away about 5 minutes later. Comes back on when I turn car off. It wont come back on again until the car become stone cold again.

Oil level is always fine.
