Toyota did something in the Uk years ago, they launched a corolla sport with bodykit, six speed box and poultry 1300cc engine ...
A bit of a cock-up, then.
Yup, they 'chickened' out of putting a better engine in.

BMW badged it as such, but only on the kick plates and steering wheel.

And on each side of the car.

It also has the same transmission as the M2,3,4,5,6 of that era, although I think its configured differently.

It was a very strange car all round marketed as sport, aimed at youngsters by a brand typically driven by pensioners and mini cab drivers

I believe the ///M on the side was done at LCI, previously it just had the SDrive 35iS on it, probably at the same time as the marketing philosophy changed, certainly the 35iS was the forerunner to the M Performance brand that we see now with M40i et al

Based on BMW's current marketing strategy, you could argue that the 35is was (when the roof is up) the forerunner to the Toyota Supra.

From what I have been able to determine, the only difference between the 35i "m sport" and 35is is that the 35is has a 7 second extra boost function. I still think they are both missing some significant performance items to make it a ///M

Well if it was good enough to be used in the 1M and be classed as an ///M why could it not the same for the Z4, gave as much power as the e85 Z4M

The 35is isn't a M Performance model or M Light like the current M40i or M240i etc. are, I believe BMW put the M badging there only due to it having the M Sport trim package which was the only trim level it came in. People decided to call it the M version for the E89 like the E85 / E86 Z4M but in reality this really isn't the case.

Can't believe there have been 9 pages of comments in a week....over a badge !
(But I suppose it's better than talking about COVID :D )

It is the meaning of the badge that is important, not the badge itself. I know it is way down the scale on comparisons, but would you wear someone else's Victoria Cross?

For those that like to create controversy, I have not compared an 'M' badge directly with a VC but from my statement that is obvious.

You literally have just compared a ///M badge to a VC.
"Would you wear someone else's hat?" is a more sensible comparison, because both hats and M badges are meaningless consumer items that people can buy and do whatever the hell they like with. Still a weak comparison because it was my badge, not anyone else's. Therefore the best comparison would be "would you wear your own hat?" - yes, yes I would.

I think you've just ended this discussion, thankfully.

I'm not sure whether these 9 pages have made me want to buy another 48 badges and cover my boot in them, or to rip every single badge of any kind off my car and never engage in conversation with a BMW enthusiast again.

I'd wear a VC on my sides, kick plates and steering wheel, but not on my rear unless I'd earnt it 8) :poke:
